I don't think I have orcs in my game. Just goblins so far. Do I have to mod something to make orcs attack? I've read about people being attacked within the first year. That sounds like a bit too much.

orcs are a mod.  They do not exist in vanilla DF.

when goblin get to silly for you THAT'S when you get the orcs as ive died some times because they come as the same time as my first migrants which just gets to a bloody mess.

yeah, only get the orc mod if you have gotten good enough at the game that goblins are no longer a threat to you. orcs are much harder and nastier, and come very early in quite large numbers. i dont think they drop as much useful iron, though unsure about that one. goblins for many people are just another iron ore. you can also press c to check what civs are near you. i think more hostile civs means larger sieges or more frequent thief appearances.

orcs dont bring filthy pants just iron or leather armor
