How does one unchain an animal?
« on: March 02, 2009, 09:00:05 pm »

I know deconstructing the chains will keep the dogs attached, but how do I detach the dogs?

Thank you to anyone who answers.  ^_^

Before deconstructing the chain, so it's currently a building:

'q' to interact with a building,
cursor over the rope,
'a' to assign an animal,
'Nobody' at the top of the list.

Then wait for a dwarf to wander over and release the dog.

I may be wrong, but if you deconstruct the chain while the animal is there, the animal wanders off with the chain on its neck.

I have another unrelated question...

I started on a map with all four types of civs (Dwarf, Human, Elf and Goblins).  I have gotten elf, dwarf and human, but not goblins.  Why is this?  I am nearly done my second year, but no goblins... :-[

This guy is not wrong.  It's a pain in the ass if your supply of metal or rope is limited in any way, because as far as I can tell, you can't get the chain back until the animal dies.

It depends on your fortress wealth and some other factors, most of the time i dont see a goblin babysnater/ambush till the third year. I dont typicaly see sieges until I reach the population req (and wealth) somewhere around my 5-6th year.

Ah, ok.  I just found the first babysnatcher, so they are in fact there.
Thank you for your help.

yes, goblins can be remarkably scattershot. i've had multiple seiges in quick succession, then years with no goblin activity, then 3 ambushes (which until then i thought were the precursor to seiges and stopped happening after you'd reached 'seige' level), then about a halfdozen snatchers.

dem gobbos man. dem gobs

Really? Scattershot? Explain the ~25 ambushes I had during my first two years.

(whom were all killed by a single marksdwarf now called "manbearpig". He machinegun-fired his bolts at them until he was empty and then proceeded to beat the crap out of them with his crossbow. up until now, he has yet to be even slightly wounded, and that in a 2 year span.)
