Magma/Lava can be stoped with raised Bridges
« on: March 07, 2009, 02:19:38 pm »

Just FYI, someone said its not possible.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yes it stays that way, no it does not burn up over time.

Not at all what was said. If those tiles in front of it were part of the bridge before it was raised, then it would burn. But the lava is unable to touch your bridge due to the wall section. Nice try, but you failed to grasp what was actually being said.

The "wall" is the raised bridge... The obsidan on the ground is because i channeld it from the top after I build the bridge.

You aren't getting the mental image. Redo this, with the bridge raising to the south, and several tiles long and wide. When you pull it up, the tiles up north still count as the bridge. When the lava/magma touches those northern tiles, the bridge will melt unless magma-safe.

What he means is:
~~~o____ -> ~~~o/ = safe
~~~____o -> ~~~~~\o = not safe

I think.

I guess I'm the one you're calling out?

Study this video carefully: http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1157-magmameltingbridges

Buildings next to magma, like a bridge that lowers away from it, are not affected by the magma.
If any tile of a building is submerged in magma, the building's materials will be affected by the magma

Raised bridges are not "walls". Raised bridges are still rectangular buildings; they simply happen to be impassible along one of their edges. They are like jeweler and bowyer workshops.

The test for magma safeness is to lower the bridge and re-raise it. If it can still function after that, then it's magma safe. From the picture it seems apparent that test hasn't been tried.

This isn't a test for toggling the states, just a test of the raised position.

Legolord is correct and you can close it again - if you do it fast enough - depending on matiral.

Make the bridge out of iron with bauxite mechanisms and FLOOD THE WORLD WITH MAGMA. It's all set for that anyway, as far as I can tell.
