I == know this.

I felt however it better to reuse a existing phenomenon to develop the idea.
sure it would be more acurate to have natural cave-gas AND miasma, but I thought the possible mischief from combining the two was too good to ignore.

so: gas(green?blue?) burns, suffocates, is an antigravity 'liquid' for purposes of dispersal and breathing, originates from deep natural caverns, chasms? and maybe as an 'aquifier' in some porous rock types that also contain butimous coal, slime or similar stuff.
miasma: gives bad thoughts of disgust, may cause disease, originates from putrefying organics.

miasma is also a medieval for of smog.
are we going to revive other pre-science concepts though? such as eather and the bodily humors as well as souls...oo! yeah ghosts! or better: !!Ghosts!!

Yes, but it might contain say, ammonia or other chemicals in the toxic cloud.

ammonia is just an irritant, it makes your eyes water and maybe your throat will become sore after prolonged exposure.
ammonia is more associated with animal piss (as breakdown product of urea) rather than their rotting remains though.
methane, though boring, is the usual inflammable component in compost or trashheaps.

Although dungheaps of old 'stable hay' also are a real fire hazard and commonly smoke/steam spontaneously, which might suggest that ammonia is somehow involved (from the pungent smell).
I have seen a pile of willow woodchips fly on fire after a rainstorm. The smell of it some time before it caught on fire was sharp with a more acidic tang.
I suspect cellulose consuming bacteria were at work here, turning it into hydrogen...anyhow the generated heat alone was sufficient to make it smolder.

"Quick! Get those rotting lizard remains away form the magma pool before-"

"Too late!"

Thief:"Quiet kitty, Qui-"
Cat:"THIEF! Protect the hoard from the skulking filth!"
The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

Then you'd have to avoid taking cats unless you have a death wish, when going to a map with a volcano. You know why?

Fire snakes.

I like the idea of dwarven land mines...barrels of explosives around your borders, and when you pull a lever, they all explode and bring the rape on any goblins that might be present.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: We need a light on fire designation.

And you'd have to assign your miners tame vermin in order to know when you hit it.

Tweetybird Zirilzuntir, tame canary, has suffocated
You have struck Natural Gas!
