I tried animal in cages, and i realy dont think they spotted anything.. ever. Goblins just ignore them anyway.
 Kittens on chains in a chokepoint are the most sucessfull so far. They slow down atackers a bit too.

One suggestion I once saw was a puppy on a chain, surrounded by a maze of fortifications, and the maze filled with things that make goblins into chunky salsa.
