I have 15 dwarfs, and I had to FPS problems.  The dwarf caravan comes.  Still not going below 95 FPS.  The elven caravan comes.  BAM, 50FPS tops.  They leave and it goes right back up to 100FPS.

Is this normal?

I find that mining the lowest levels of the fort out (even in a 1x1) is an instant recipe for your FPS committing suicide.  Doesn't even have to be anything down there interesting, just mine it.

I thought that revealing areas actually boosted FPS? I know I read something somewhere about hidden sections of the map causing it to tank.

I can confirm this. Usually I run 1000 Fps (just because it provides more accurate results for judging FPS changes) but on a map with every feature, I ran at 800. Just finding the bottomless pit and magma pipe put me up to 917 with minimal changes. There is one feature that'll slaughter your fps if you find it though.
