how does a brook work with regards to water 'flowing'?

1. does the water actually spawn/fill from one side of the map and exit/drain off the other?

2. If I managed to completely block the flow would it fill up and overflow it's banks (assuming i channeled out the magic "brook" floor tiles)?

3. what about if I made a new course for it and then blocked off its original path, would it still function and flow through it (not just fill it up like a pool)? (i guess this one doesn't so much matter but i'm interested)

4. is there any way to tell which end is the 'source' on a flat map?

1: Yes

2: No

3: Yep, I've actually routed rivers through my fortress this way. it's MY river now. You have to block off the path it originally went through, or else it'll just split the amount of water between the paths, and you'll want to redirect it to where it originally drained, otherwise it WILL just fill up like a ppol, and not flow

4: Loo[k] on either end where it connects to outside of the map. If it says "water [7/7]", that's the source. If it's something less than that, it's draining from that end. Usually you can tell which way it's going just by looking at it though

it does flow when you redirect without blocking. A got a waterwheel under my fortress working fine (in a big "8" shaped sewer system for internal water supply and power, it flows everywhere). I just made sure to have a "entrance" channel and an "exit" channel that touch the brook to allow it to flow.
