Knights of the Old Republic, Master of Orion II (probably my second or third favorite game ever),  Battle for Middle Earth (trolls!!), Soldat, Colonization (one of my first tbs games).

Galactic Civilizations II
Turn Based Strategy
Metacritic Rating: 86/100

GalCiv II is a grand strategy game set in space. It is a bit like Civilization, in which you expand your empire, explore new worlds, war with your neighbors, advance your technology, and so on. I don't have much to say about it other than that it's a pretty solid game.

Company of Heroes
Real Time Strategy
Metacritic Rating: 93/100

Company of Heroes is the most meticulously detailed RTS I have ever seen. Engineers build entrenchments and sabotage bridges. Tanks will knock down walls and crush barbed wire and sandbags. Infantry fortify buildings, take cover behind walls, and duck into craters. Squads advance with bounding tactics. Soldiers pick up and fire enemy weapons. Artillery blows apart buildings. Once you've played Company of Heroes, games like Age of Empires, Command and Conquer, and Warcraft seem distinctly primitive in their execution.

Sins of a Solar Empire
Real Time Strategy
Metacritic Rating: 88/100

There isn't really any other game like Sins of a Solar Empire. It takes the RTS genre, slows it down, and scales it up. You command an entire empire in an interstellar war, and not an Age of Empires scale empire, but an actual Civilization scale empire, fighting planet by planet, developing individual colonies, and generally conducting all the exploration, research, diplomacy, and empire building that you'd expect from a grand strategy game like that. This game is beautiful, the action is exciting, and it's so unique that there's really no competition for it out there. For me, a typical game of SoaSE lasts 2 to 8 hours straight, non-stop real time action. It's also great if you have trouble with the fast pace typical of RTS games, but still like the genre.

Left 4 Dead
First Person Shooter
Metacritic Rating: 89/100

Left 4 Dead is a cooperative zombie shooter. You play as one of four survivors of a zombie apocalypse, and try to get to rescue. There's no point in getting this game if you don't plan to play online. If you do play online, it is incredibly fun. I've seen multiple people who are giddy that they're playing a game this fun. Also, since this is made by the same company that made Half-Life, you may be interested to know you have tons of ammo. Even if you run out on your primary weapon, you'll just switch to pistols, which have infinite ammo.

Mass Effect
Role Playing Game
Metacritic Rating: 89/100

If you like Western RPGs (Fallout and Arcanum among them), you should really check out at least one BioWare game, as they're a very respected company, and they specialize in the genre. Mass Effect is their newest game, and comes highly recommended. Granted, there is a lot of clicking in combat, and it is real time, but not in the Diablo-style click-fest you might expect. Mass Effect's combat is modeled after first person shooters, with RPG stats. It is vaguely similar to Fallout 3 in terms of its combat style. Mass Effect has the best dialogue system I've ever seen in an RPG, full voice acting, and an epic science fiction story set in a new universe. Plus, if you're into it, you can keep your save game, and use it in the upcoming sequel -- important, since your choices in the game have permanent effects on the game world, and even who lives and dies among your allies. This would be a great option to branch out into other RPG styles beyond the top-down style of Fallout 1 & 2 and Arcanum.

Puzzle Quest
Puzzle
Metacritic Rating: 84/100

Puzzle Quest is basically an RPG where you engage in combat by playing Bejeweled against your opponent. Casual and hardcore gamers agree: The result is way more fun than it sounds or has any right to be.

  • Europa universalis has reached third installment some time ago, but maybe you've played it already? Anyway, similar game: Hearts of Iron 2, same developer, similar mechanics, different setting, equally challenging and fun. Try playing Poland and conquering Germany. Or invading USA with your Japanese marines.

This. Grab anthology with both expanisions and grab the latest beta patch which makees the AI much more capable. Also, Hearts of Iron 3 is coming out pretty soon with over 9000 10000 land provinces, Europa Universalis 3 has 1700.

I really don't get why people like Galactic Civilizations 2 that much..... It doesn't have great combat, the shipbuilder is almost only for the appearance and the economics are not spectacular either. The only thing I find good about it is the AI.....

I'm surprised that The Orange Box hasn't been mentioned yet.
True, it's got TF2, which is an online-only game, but HL2, EP1 & EP2 are there as well, and those alone are well worth the price (which is pretty low now)
I'm not altogether sure how well it would work on a machine that will never get connected online, but if you can get it online very rarely, even once, then you can put Steam in offline mode, and not have to worry about the online requirement.

Once you've got the OB, there are hundreds of mods open to you now, many of which offer single-player.

BTW, People, stop suggesting WoW for a computer that won't be online...
Alexhans, might I suggest you bold and upsize the no-internet part of the original post?

Thanks to all.  Im starting to answer... Look up your quote  :P

Quote from: Sniper Joe
Just getting into it, but I can recommend Operation Flashpoint if you

want what could be considered a "Soldier sim".

Doesn't OF need a huge multiplayer set to be fun?  Is there a good

single play in it? I've played it with some friends (4 and me) and it

took us ages to find each other...  And finally we resolved everything

in about 4 seconds with an insane driver smashing up his enemies. ;)

Quote from: Mephisto
I would recommend Sins of a Solar Empire or Supreme Commander for RTS.

Throw Galactic Civilizations in for good measure.

Then there's Sword of the Stars for a RTS/TBS hybrid.

I enjoyed the Star Wars Battlefront series, too.

You can't tell what kind of games I like, can you?

Star wars battlefront didn't impress me because it was just an AOE mod.

Even though I love star wars.  I'm researching about the other games

and will keep them in mind.

Quote from: Zaithemaster
I must recommend all Romance of the Three Kingdoms games. They win my

soul.

I love almost all Koei games.  The last version of Romance I played is

3 or 4 i think...  I got more addicted to Ghengis Khan I, II and

Liberty or Death though.

Quote from: Onlyhestands
Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing
best game ever

I'll assume this is a joke...

Quote from: Mad Larks
Transport Tycoon Deluxe.

Its awesome.

Also, I noted that you have written Planescape: Torment under the RPGs.

Kudos on that. Three other games I can heartily recommend are

Painkiller (FPS), Psychonauts(Uhh...adventure, I guess.) and Serious

Sam(FPS).

I don't care what bad things people have to say about Serious Sam, its

hilarious and awesome.

Obviously I've played Transport Tycoon Deluxe a lot.
I heard good things about psychonaut and Serious Sam...  If it's fun

it's good enough for me ;)

I play World of Warcraft.

It's not nearly as bad as people think
World of Warcraft? (I don't really fancy online RPG's)

Is it more than just slaying monsters over and over and buying/selling items?

(all links to wikipedia - which in turn provides more links)
TBS:
  • Europa universalis has reached third installment some time ago, but maybe you've played it already? Anyway, similar game: Hearts of Iron 2, same developer, similar mechanics, different setting, equally challenging and fun. Try playing Poland and conquering Germany. Or invading USA with your Japanese marines.
  • HOM&M V same old game with a few more details added, few tweaks here and there, and graphics well suited for your new rig.
Thanks for the links and all  :)
Don't worry, I know all about Europa Universalis III and was definetely gonna get it.  Hearts of iron I and II are also in my playing plans.
And obviously I will try out the new HoM&M...
Quote from: Il Palazzo
RTS:
  • Medieval 2: Total war. If you liked Shogun, you'll love this, obviously, as it delivers more of the same good stuff. Plus eye candy.
  • I second Sins of Solar Empire. The game is both great fun and very pretty.
Total Wars are a must for me.
Quote from: Il Palazzo
RPG:
  • The Witcher - linear, real-time combat, great storytelling, refreshing, serious, very pretty.
  • Never played Oblivion, but everybody seemed excited about it.
Yeah, about oblivion I gotta look into it too.  I'll have to investigate more on Witcher.
Quote from: Il Palazzo
Adventure:
  • Ooh, if you're a serious fan of adventure games, then The Longest Journey is a must! It's got such an amazingly well written story. Somewhat old now, but hey, it still looks excellent. Some of the locations are simply breathtaking. If one were to describe this game with a single word, then it'd be "magical" or "enthralling".
Great.  I won't let it pass unplayed.

I suggest Touhou.

And assorted Japanese Shmups

and other Doujin games

Err... Translate?  ;) What are these Japanese Shmups and Doujin games?

World in Conflict. It's awesome go play it.

Noted.  Seen good reviews.

TF2
L4D
(Team Fortress 2 and Left4Dead)

Also, Warcraft III is a good if semi-old one, if you haven't tried it yet.

I played the First TF and liked it but got slaughtered against experienced players... need practice.

Have you tried Touhou?

(meet me in IRC. I may be able to send, uh, a "sample")

Wich IRC?  is there an IRC of bay12games or something?  I havent got Internet at home yet.  But I'm gonna get as soon as I find a decent, not to expensive service (and have my computer ready)

I think that one of the older versions of ZSNES supports netplay, and I'd be down to play online with people. I haven't played in a long time, though, so I might get slaughtered.
Yeah, I realized yesterday (I use ZSNES).  I really suck so don't worry.
Quote from: inaluct
Anyway, have you found the P90 yet? It's in that seventh mission. The one in the store.
err... no... I've gotten a couple of better weapons after winning missions but no P90.
Quote from: inaluct
Also, as a tip; use those Task Force guys in the missions with a noncombat objective, and use snipers in the can missions. You can use the sniper's special ability to take down the cans in one shot.
Yeah... I kinda figured it out about the task force guys.  The problem is that I usually send them right at the enemy.  GOOD SNIPER TIP!
Quote from: inaluct
Until the HARD missions, most enemies aren't minmaxed for speed, so after a while you can usually judge what parts of cover are safe to hide in.
After a long while...

Knights of the Old Republic, Master of Orion II (probably my second or third favorite game ever),  Battle for Middle Earth (trolls!!), Soldat, Colonization (one of my first tbs games).

I could never get to play Master of Orion... Couldn't install it, don't know why... Battle for Middle Earth was in my plans (I love Tolkiens books).  I played Soldat with bots and didn't find it so cool... maybe online...  Colonization:  I'm a CIV fan.  Get out of here !!! ;)  Knights of the Old Republic: Noted.  I love Star Wars too... I think I played this one a bit... Isn't it the one that you start through a training course after you create your player? (race, gender, nice editing)

Wow, that's a nice com you've got there.

Might I recommend poker? It's fun with friends...

Funny you say this.  Last year I learnt how to play poker and got really addicted (I DONT play with money, Im against gambling).  Here in Argentina is not a very common game.  We play mostly Truco (Wich is similar in the lying part) but I kept bothering my friends till they allowed me to teach them and now they ask me to gather to play ;)  I also taught 8 or 9 members of my family and we played last christmas with mini m&ms as chips.  I have users created in Triplejack too... Yesterday a lost a tournament I were i was leading ;)

Garry's Mod aka GMod. Genre: sandbox
If you do get it, it will probably take over your life (similar to WoW in that respect), so watch out. :P
It's a physics sandbox that lets you do... well, just about anything
-has multiplayer
-is steam powered =/

Don't think I saw it listed but Jagged Alliance is a must play.
Same with Freespace 2 (get the community open source version).

Warning Forever

http://www.download.com/Warning-Forever/3000-7440_4-10298144.html

It's what I play when I'm not playing DF.  You said you have been getting by on freeware, so you might already know about it.  It's a top-down shmup where you fight a series of bosses.  Each new boss evolves depending on how you killed the previous one.  If you consistently shoot off only the frontmost piece, then the front of the boss will grow.  Like DF, it's a one-man effort, but unfortunately it's no longer updated.  Still, I'd pay twenty bucks for it if the author wasn't giving it away for free.  I don't play the default game, I play "nine lives and unlimited time".

Painkiller

I don't know if you ever played Doom I or II back in the day, but Painkiller is the REAL sequel to Doom II, despite having nothing to do with it whatsoever.  The story is borderline retarded and the level flow is incoherent (although the design is pretty good for its time).  It's available for like ten bucks at any Wal-Mart or on eBay.  Watch Yahtzee's review of it if you can stand him, he does it justice.  Don't bother with the expansions, especially the second one.

American McGee's Alice and the two System Shock games are dated, but worth playing even in this modern age.  System Shock has what I consider to be the greatest villain in any videogame ever.
