Dwarves not sparring?
« on: February 22, 2009, 09:14:32 am »

I have a barracks all set up, and 22 military dwarves. All but 4 of them will spar. Why is it that they won't spar?

Maybe they are too busy playing dwarf fortress recursively.

Perhaps there is not enough floor space for all of them to spar.  You need large barracks for a large military.

Are they injured in the spine or brain? They won't spar with nervous system injuries.

▼Just realized, my sig is too long.

^^^ Yeah, check them for wounds, and make SURE you scroll down -- often nervous wounds don't show in the first page.

And note that light gray wounds are bruised body parts, not missing body parts.

A bruised brain is very different from a missing brain.  Always good to remember.

No, it won't, unless you cheat with an external utility like Dwarf Companion.  You can minimize these issues in the future by equipping soldiers with good armor and shields, putting them on Wrestling first (so they learn to dodge), and avoiding the use of swords and spears, which are notorious for taking out sparring partners.

The safest way to train your military is to equip them with plate and shields as soon as possible. You don't even have to have this gear to begin with, just order them to use it. They'll grab the best armor they can as soon as it becomes available, and you can at least start out with leather armor.

Once they reach champion status, give them war hammers. If they never reach champion status due to spine injuries, too bad, so sad. Give them warhammers anyways and send them out to battle.

Natural selection will take care of the rest.
