Could you also build floor tiles over boulders? I don't know why it would be preferrable, but I believe that is also an option.

you could. the other disadvantage to this is that you can't  build a road where you built a floor.

then again maybe your engravers are just too busy!

Yes you can. You can build anything on a floor that isn't another construction, iirc. My last fort even had a constructed floor 'bridge' over a river valley, with a stone brick road over it.

oh, you're  right,  my bad.

i was confused thinking about  how you can't build TRAPS over a road. so actually, a floor might be superior to a road  in that respect.
