Battlezone series.

I also recommend it.

As do I.

The memory of the last mission still makes me shiver, "Hurry grizzly one! We can't wait any longer for you!".

Grizzly with dual SP stabbers and a hornet, pure awesome. Sasquatches are fun also, if you have the patience for them.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

Battalion wars 1 and 2 have controllable tanks and infantry squads. Can definately recommend those.

I was going to mention those. =)

Advance Wars is good too, but all of these games are probably more cartoony than what you're looking for.

I typically don't play many games based on modern concepts (i.e. tanks), so that's pretty much all I've got. Sorry.

Armour-Geddon.

It's a strange game where you macromanage a base and build bombers/fighters/tanks/hovercrafts in an alien planet, trying to get materials to build more and assemble parts of a neutron bomb or something. These are a combination of real world tech (the vehicle bodies are pretty much 21th century stuff), but you can put a laser as a "anti-light armor" weapon, and arm your tanks with tank shells and stuff. They handle pretty interestingly, specially the hovercraft which is a real-life version with skirts and all. And a bitch to maneuver.

You also could drop teleporters with your bomber, but I think could drop only 4 or so and they were indestructible, because the map is huge. They work more as "checkpoints" for land vehicles. Oh and don't ever expect your bomber to come back, you're pretty much going to wait till the last second you have to live to drop the telly as far away as possible :P

Anyway I thought the game was frustratingly hard. There is a time limit and you can run out of minerals. You can pick up more minerals with your tank I think and your base mines them very slowly. Even though I never made much progress I think it was a fun time sinker, heh.

But there you go.

I used to play the Amiga version, on an actual Amiga. I think there's a DOS version too.

I am not sure that what kind of game are you looking for, but Men of War will be pretty awesome. [Probably it will be the best ww2 based RTS, and it's gonna be released soon..]
You can find lot of in-game videos on youtube about the game.  :)

It's published by 1C, which is specialized in releasing high quality concepts with pathetic execution. Their games generaly have outrageous system requirements(a 1GB GPU for a game that doesn't even feature directional lighting...?), bad graphics(original Quake levels of bad) and still perform like your computer is made out of cardboard. I don't have anything good to say about the regular depth of their games either. For a recent example, i direct you at Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason

You're correct. In Soviet Russia, games buy you.

In Soviet Bay 12 forums, Troll is YOU!

But jokes aside, In Russia (Actual Russia. Not Soviet Reversal Russia.) they buy PIRATED games in BRICK AND MORTAR STORES! (Game stores.)

They buy PIRATED stuff in stores. Stores sell pirated stuff. It's LEGAL. Shit's fucked up.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that "legal" games are generaly released several years late or more often then not, aren't released at all. If you want something in russia, you either pay through your nose or get a cracked version. Valve said that by releasing games in eastern europe at the same price and time as the rest of the world, ~50% of all piracy would stop.

You're also forgetting that Russian pirate communities are the biggest in the world. Hell most gamers there pirate everything instead of buying. Game sales there are extremely low from what I can gather.

Hell most Russian gamers can't afford to buy games anyway. You may think "But they can afford the rigs to play them!" and you're not wrong. But they save up. It's a big spend. Once it's done, they start saving up again. There are a lot of poor people in Russia.

While releasing games worldwide at the same time will lower piracy a bit, it wont put a dent in the Russian piracy trade.

Not tanks, but Ring of Red for the PS2 has tank-like Mecha. It's a Action/tactics/strategy game that's always had a place in my heart.

That is pretty much the same where I live.

One computer game is like half of the minimum wage. IF it cost the same as in USA. But they charge twice as much for it because of tax, shipping, etc. Do the math.

really? wow, turns out I never bought a legal game in my life. Well... at least now I don't feel as bad about my Internet piracy.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that 1c sells their games for reasonable amounts of money, as there's really no reason to buy their games except supporting local industry, and noone would throw away 50$ on that  ::).

omg that brings back memories of a low graphic but insanly fun game

playbattleground.com....or something like that....maybe org or net

there are 4 teams. you drive around as a tank radar the place to look for equipment, then once your loaded up you go hunting for other tanks. there is fuel which depletes slowly while moving and firing, but you can teleport which uses up large amounts of fuel.

you can also plant mines. i usually work on a base. find an enclosed area and fill i with mines, bring fuel over, and drag boulders to block the entrance so only my team can get in. of course missles that can shoot over things are a problem. but an organized team could prbably be invincable if they know what they are doing.

it has many ranks and the more ranks you have the more stuff you can do....higher up games where you have to take down actual players and not the AI turn into huge map wide battle feilds. 10 people gang up on 1 guy and the one guy teleports like mad all over the place grabbing fuel and running....its so hard to kill a player who knows how to run but they are still fun.

How has no one mentioned Red Orchestra?

I recommend that or fine BF2 mods like project reality, and then Armed Assault and Operation Flashpoint (more emphasis on infantry tactics but with realistic tanks)
