I must be totally dense...
« on: February 17, 2009, 10:25:49 am »

Like some of the dwarves I've been trying to order around...

I keep seeing people mention the game in 3d and I've seen the screenies on the wiki.  However, I have yet to figure out how to get the game to play in 3d.  I keep ending up in 2d which is a lot of fun, but I'd still like to give it a go in 3d.  Anyone willing to help this particularly dense dwarf lover?

What exactly do you mean by 3d, 3d graphics? Right now there is no way to really play with 3d graphics, though there are tools that let you view your fortress in 3d.

When people say Dwarf Fortress is 3d, they mean that gameplay-wise the world is simulated in 3 dimensions. To go up or down a layer just press < or > respectively.

It is 3D in the sense that the game area incorporates all 3 axes (x, y, z).  The visuals themselves are not in 3D.  Compare this to the older, 2D versions, where everything took place on the same flat area, and you could not dig down or up.

While there's an expirementel utility that renders a 3D map as you play the game itself is played in 2d. There are multiple z-levels but they require to to shift your view to that z-level to see anything.

The screens you've seen were probably done by 3D dwarf as a way to show what the map looks like at a given instant in time. I don't think anyone's actually playing with 3D live short of folks messing around with the expirementel utility.

Although Lifevis is rather close to such a thing.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Heh... See?  I am dense.  I got the whole z-axis thing down already, I just thought with the shots in the wiki showing side views that there was a version out doing that.

Host your map on there and I believe it will let you have a side view.

Perhaps we're talking about screencaps from a fortress rendered by 3Dwarf?

side view shots on the wiki? only ones i remember were illustrations, though if people have been sticking things up from the map viewer program good for them. hopefully easier to understand. and DF does have some kind of weird not really functional 3d viewing thing built into it. ive found it a few times by accident. it has a message saying "this feature is not currently intended to be useful"

That's the V button, but it just shows a grey map with some elevation. (Or just a flat map, if your map is like that for some reason.)
I'm going to try 3Dwarf now...

(First post, btw.)

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.
