Checking the game out, am I right in assuming all trade between planets needs to be done manually?  Cause that's kinda too much micromanagement for my taste.

Still, this looks like a great LP to watch!

No, you can set automatic supply routes between planets.  Doing that manually is more for special cargoes, like ambrosia or trillum, which might be shipped in bulk once every decade or so.
