Favored metals
« on: February 16, 2009, 11:37:58 pm »

Is it better to fill a room with, say, masterwork iron furniture, or if the noble in question likes a lesser value metal, such as bronze, would it be best to instead make bronze furniture for him?

The wiki says there is a bonus if the item is made out of their favorite material, but how big is the bonus? Is it worth pursuing, or should I instead just mass produce masterwork iron furniture?

Blowing weapons-grade metal on decorations makes me reflexively cringe -- I would rather burn surplus iron on bolts than use it for furniture, so I would have to have massive quantities of iron before I could justify expending it on anything but military hardware.

Assuming you're like me you'd have to have amassed stacks of armor, piles of weapons, forests of bolts, and a great underground vault filled to the ceiling with bins of iron bars all protected by a spinning, chopping, piercing gauntlet of metal doom before you even considered using iron for anything else.

Given the tonnage of iron you'd need to justify burning it on furniture, I'd say just keep making stuff out of iron.  It is quite valuable apart from its military applications and you obviously have plenty of it.

One of my forts had a lot of magnetite clusters and I made roads of iron.
Personally i'd vager that higher value is preffered but toss in a favoured furniture from time to time for diversity.

It is indeed better to use lower grade metal if that is what they like. It will instantly boost them to the highest possible happiness level because of it. One of my dwarves loved prickle berry wine. I bought a cask. "Enjoyed a truly decadent drink" One of my dwarves likes cave lobster shell. I decorated his bedroom furniture in it "Slept in a room like a personal palace"

If you can put their favorite things on display for them, they are always VERY happy.

And hey, if I have enough iron that I can outfit my entire armor in steel weaponry and armor, I will use my spare iron to pretty things up, if I can. Steel if I have a really nice coal vein or thirty, which my last fortress did.

my current fort has so very much iron but no flux, and hardly any coal that i can find. its also in the badlands, so my only wood comes from import. the way im going in regards to finding magnetite veins, i could pretty much make all my furniture out of the platinum that comes in it. i dont even mine the ore out anymore, as i have nowhere left to store it. when you have this much metal and no wood, its almost easier to start making everything out of it, assuming you arent limited by something else like lack of fuel.

Thing is, the supply of metal isn't a problem. I'm using an obsidian type mod, where I can extract any type of metal from magma or ordinary rock. Of course it takes a lot of labor, but then, its merely soap makers slaving away in the smelters. It takes some 30 smelter workers to sustain a single magma forge (assuming about 50% time off spent sleeping, drinking, eating, and wasting time in the party hall).

I figure dwarves ought to be metalworkers no matter what. A dwarf fortress made entirely out of wood seems, I dunno, against the entire point of things.

I'm just curious what the value modifier is for preferred metals, thats all.

As Kel said three posts ago, the multiplier is <material value> x YES. If you give a dwarf a material he likes, any thoughts related to it are automatically the highest "thought power," as though it were made of adamantine.

To this end, I always look through my dwarves personality charts, and begin ordering stone and wood they like, if I can not get it myself. Eventually, their rooms are all decked out with furniture and doors made of their favorite material, if I can get my hands on it.

I pride myself on never once succumbing to the dreaded tantrum spiral. My dwarves are just too happy at "OMArmok! I just LOVE this jet coffer, that featherwood bed, with all the dog bones on it, and my pet donkey. Oh, my wife and six children died? Meh, I got all my cool shit!"

In my current fort, I've found 5 1/2 entire deposits of magnetite that I can get to without leaving my fort, plus another 3 veins of Limonite.  I've also located 2 magnetite deposits, 1 vein of Limonite, and 1 vein of Hematite that are on mountain slopes outside.  And that's with zero exploratory mining.

So...yeah.

i would do that too, if 1 good cook and 1 good brewer couldn't single handedly keep my entire fort happy.

i have this awsome fort. it started with an exposed magma pipe and a vein of lignite and hematite that where it was visible was 5 or so tiles wide! the entire first level is chalk and i have 10 m smelters running full time with 20 workers. 5 on iron 3 on pig iron then 2 on steel. that allows me to keep it going. also with my firt mine shaft i found boxite! this will be an awsome for it i can get around the four or five gobo towers right next door and at war. mostly i leave favored stuff alone and work build generic 1x3 rooms with a door a coffer and a bed but if it really does max the happy then my dwarves will be getting persanlized rooms from now on.

Does that formula mean the "preferred" value is the square of the item value?

Make everything out of iron. If they don't like it you should throw them into the sea, for they are not real Dwarves.
