Need help choosing a tileset.
« on: January 31, 2009, 05:36:11 pm »

So, peeps, after being getting angry at DF because of my save getting corrupted, causing me to lose my obsidian castle fort with HFS, i've been away from DF for a while.

Now that i'm back, i wanna try a tileset. I never really liked tileset, i love the nostalgic charm of ASCII, but after playing dungeon crawl's tile version, i want to try it on DF.

So, anyone can show me a good tileset, one that doesn't "break" DF's taste?

Ah, that's what I want.

I'm currently working on building one. Should take a few hundred hours to get it nice and polished.

I highly recommend that you search around this page. You might find one you like.

If you're looking for something interesting then this(uppermost one on the screen) could be something to look at. Remember, you can always edit the sets. If you don't like the graphics for objects then you can just copy-paste something from a different set. Its the walls in that set that are really impressive, but if you're inclined to leave the rest of the clutter in, then remember to remove all accented letters from your game.

If you're looking for graphics sets, then the choices are more limited. The wiki page should have all sets available. Dystopian Qantas is the standard for me.

note to confused people: "graphic sets"="graphics for creatures and professions" whereas "tilesets"="the main, primary tilesets. Also known as character sets"

This is the one I use.  As a bonus, our friend Mayday has the set already installed in the file that you download, so if you decide you don't like it, you just delete the new DF folder and go back to playing your old one.

I know I'm outspoken here, but I really prefer to keep the non-square tiles, so consequently the tileset that Plac1d provided on the wiki. The graphics set that goes with it is also great. It is very close to the vanilla set and won't put wierd symbols in the names.

I'll second the Mayday set, works great - except for granite doors.

AFAIK, Mayday is great IFF you aren't particularly fond of the way Toady intended the game to look.[/biasedopinion]

If you are, you're out of luck. At least, 'till I finish my tileset.

Remove those accents

Savok, that was a total non sequitur

By definition, if you're using any graphics set at all, aren't you changing DF from the way "Toady intended the game to look"?

By definition, technically. (and I think you mean "graphics, in a graphics set or tileset)

I would argue that graphics sets with the same feel as the 8x12 do not destroy the way Toady intended the game to look.

I personally would like the game to look better, but that's not why I play.

I would hesitate to think that the game was intended to look any particular way beyond bare-bones functionality.

I use a square version of the default tileset. It's slightly larger and thus easier on the eyes. I like it because, like you, I appreciate the natural look of DF, but I can't stand rectangular tiles :)

I currently have a fortress uploaded that uses the tileset I'm speaking of which can be found here:

http://www.mkv25.net/dfma/map-4555-workmurders

Tileset link: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/List_of_user_character_sets#Tyrving

The only difference between the one I use and Tyrving, is that I use the smiley faces as dwarves, rather than the bearded ones.
