pets will still get through doors set to 'keep tightly shut' if a dwarf passes through and opens it. the pets just can't open the door on their own.

put more than one door in a row. or pit them into an area accesable only by retracting drawbridge:

X is starcases; _ bridge; a is where the animals stay, ---> leads to the rest of the fort; and O are walls

make sense? might not be the most efficient or easy method, but it should work reliably as the animals are droped back into their pit when the bridge retracts.
