Question about farming
« on: January 28, 2009, 12:46:37 pm »

I noticed that when I create a farm plot on loamy soil, I usually end up with a plot that only requires 1 unit of potash to fertilize, but that when I flood said plot it bumps up to 7-8. Does this mean that the farm plot becomes more resource intensive if I flood it? That in this case, my farming would be that much more efficient if I did not flood it?

Fertilizing does not allways work. I don't remember the exact conditions, but i think "daylight"-plots can not / need not to be fertilized. Whatevr the condition - such a un-fertilizeable plot will allways show 1 unit of potash needed, and nothing at all is going to happen, when you actually order it fertilized.

I'm not 100% positive about this but I think flooding it merely gives it the potential to be more heavily fertilized. The current output stays the same but it allows for higher levels of fertilization.

So it's a good thing right? I should always flood my farm plots given the chance.

Also on a unrelated topic, can I link more than one mechanism to a floodgate/building? For instance, lets say I connect a level to open a flood gate, can I also connect a pressure plate that's sensitive to water to the same flood gate? thus closing it when the water reaches a certain point?

Yes, you can hook up as many mechanisms to a gate as you want.

Unfertiliezed farms produce easily enough for your forts needs. Especially if your planters have any skill, you'll produce more than you'll ever need. (I prefer to turn the 'all dwarves harvest' to 'only farmers harvest' through the options so the exp gained from harvesting doesn't go to someone who'll never actually plant anything).

Also potash making needs wood which IMHO is better used elsewhere.

Because it's really pointless, flooding your farms (seasonally. No need for this but just for the fun of it..) in order to fertilize them is the true dwarven way.  ::)

if it says 0/1 you can't actually fertilize it. If you flood it, it gives you the real number needed and you can then fertilize it normally.

So yes, it is a good thing if you want to fertilize - however it's kind of pointless right now. Farms get planted quickly and with 5 crops per square possible with legendary growers all you need is a 5x5 plot for a small fort or 10x10 for a huge one and you are good to go. Fertilizer does have advantages - you can get more per square, I've seen 8 and I've heard up to 11 is possible. 11 crops per square means you could have stacks of 220 syrup roasts or barrels of 55 drink. Not really worth it, IMO, because space is not really a concern either but it is kind of nice.

If it hasn't been flooded you actually are not allowed to fertilize it until you do, and if you give the command... it is ignored by the dwarves.
