You'll never need a road again

I just realized how to avoid building a road forever.  Sometimes in a heavily forested area You need a road to keep a depot access clear, but you don't need to build a paved road to accomplish this.

All you need is a miner and a mason.  Just outside the beginning of your entrance (where the traps and paths or whatever are dig a ramp in the dirt one level down.  Replace though ramps with stone ramps (If stuff grows on dirt ramps, IDK if they do) then dig a 3 by however long cavern to the edge of the map.  At the edge dig another row of ramps (and replace with stone) and build a 3x3 stone floor.  Now you've got a permanent depot access at 1/10th of the time.  Bonanza!

I did this the other day because my caravans kept getting ambushed. The entrance is very close to the edge of the map, and this underground passage is the ONLY spot on the map that is caravan-accessible because it goes under my moat.

Maybe a few rows of weapon traps every 20 tiles or so would be appropriate... does running water over dirt cause problems?  I recall someone mentioning a water pump system to push items and corpses towards a drain, that would really cut down on hauling tasks should baddies die in the tunnel

AFAIK, all water pump systems rapidly degrade objects. This can be a good thing, in that the objects will be shredded to nothingness long before they reach the drain. Sometimes.

Can anybody verify this?  I thought I'd noticed it once, but I figured it was because the items were getting bounced off of drawbridges or something.  If this is true, it's great (for me).

I don't think so. I've got some narrow clothing sitting in my flowing moat for going on 5 years now and it hasn't degraded at all, though it has moved around a fair bit.

Flowing water sometimes rapidly degrades objects. Of this I am quite certain.

I've used a similar design myself a few forts back, I had it go deeper than you though and had fortifications for archers and what not.

Is it at 7/7 most of the time? Its just deep water like that doesn't count as flowing water, you will find the same problem with trying to flush foes into a pit, it works fine until the water gets deep.

Yeah, cycles 6/7 all of the time. I'll experiment. The moat has a drain so I can flush more often and see how lower water levels change things.
