Starting locations.
« on: January 28, 2009, 12:36:57 pm »

Hello all. I'm having a bit of trouble with getting a good starting location... While I've been able to get most of the features after a couple of world generations, I suddenly have trouble getting any goblin neighbors, and I think DF wouldn't be the same without the sieges. However, I get the same problem with the pregenerated worlds on the wiki.

So, can anyone help me? Is the wiki-page just outdated and everyone else is using another one? Or am I just being unlucky?

EDIT: Sorry, I do see there's a topic like this just below. And probably loads of them further back... I don't immediately see a delete button, though...

If you got humans nearby you can always make them attack you :). having a human siege against me at the moment but theyre just standing idle even tho my bridge is down.

Kobolds will steal from you.  If they manage to steal enough stuff, amassing a certain value, they will send sieges.  Kobold sieges are kind of silly.  It really consists of stealthed kobold archers skulking around the edges of your fortress taking shots at any dwarves who happen to be outside.  Annoying, and sometimes dangerous, but never deadly.

You can cause a human siege by pissing off the humans.  This requires you seizing their merchants' goods and failing to protect caravans.  After a while, they will send military squads to siege you.  If they send very large military squads, some of the humans will ride horses.  The humans will build campfires outside your fortress and hang around for a while, killing any dwarves that get too close.  After a few days, sometimes weeks, they will charge your fortress just like goblins.
