too much UI improvement or streamlining of the intended flow of gameplay might take this game away from its current niche.

No it wouldn't, because the game itself would still be the same, and it would still be hard to survive winter. Especially the UI; making the UI easier would make the game easier to get into and less frustrating, but only for people who have the ability to actually play it and survive in the first place. The player demographic would still be largely the same.

Half the stuff posted on tigsource is freeware, so I'd say yes.  My gut feeling is that indie refers more to the absence of a controlling publisher than to any particular payment model.

Almost all indie games, at least the ones in the indie "scene" ARE freeware.

Why would you be less "independent" by commercializing your work?
