That's a matter of tweaking (ignore dabbling skills, change tense, etc.). It's just absurd that the player is forbidden to know the nuts and bolts of Urist while he's hauling stones before his eyes, and probably would be happy with the interruption.

Hello!

I guess the history page in its style would pose a minor problem, but then again, it would make for a convenient shortcut.

So, I can understand the complaint about the style looking odd.

However, I can not agree with the statement about archeologists. As Silverionmox pointed out, fortress mode should give you access to its own data. It is just as weird as having your dwarves engrave historic events but then being unable to tell you what they just engraved - you had to send an adventurer in to find that out (fortunately, that got fixed in recent versions).

I can see that those who want the more 'gameish' aspect of revealing history may be saddened by this. So, maybe handling it like the engravings with a setting in the init file could be a compromise?

a few clarifications:

In my example the "became an apprentice ____" was just to denote he came of age and was given that profession by the RNG gods. I did not mean to include that in year 517 he was a woodcutter for 3 months while he temporarily filled a vacancy before getting a permanent job. A child born in your fort that came of age would likely have peasant, grower or possibly a craft profession from making an artifact. In my list of exclusions was the "became <profession>" since that would fill endless pages.

I also don't want to lose the kill or relationship screens, even though some information found on both might be found on the history screen. These screens are very useful. The history screen should not record every goblin kill and every acquaintance, but should include (semi?) megabeast kills, marriages/births/deaths of family etc and other rare or once-in-a-lifetime events.

Yay, I'm all good for getting to know my dwarves better when they are still alive!

I don't mean that the data should be hidden from the player. Well, maybe some data, but not this stuff.

I just feel that the history page is both thematically and mechanically the wrong way to display it. It's clunky and redundant, and it cuts in on the specialness of unlocking history. (I know Urist McHardcore killed the demon lord RapeMurder the Painful Rioting Incests of DeathHell, but I still want to get it engraved and into the history books. It's a scorekeeping device, and more.)

Add his birth date and relevant immigration dates to his profile.

If apprenticeship comes up. List his current or most recent mentor there, and leave all his former teachers in his relationship page.

Don't make it any harder than it needs to be to be done right.

The age of animals would be useful too.
I agree that animals should have a profile page of their own.  In the current release, it would only have the kill list (which I want to see!).  But add the age proposal from here, the eye color and etc from the next release, and genetic information, and it actually becomes useful.
