Does anyone remember that challenge?
« on: January 26, 2009, 07:21:46 pm »

Alright, for my next fortress I decided to go with one of the most awesome challenges I can recall.  The problem is, I can't remember what the challenge is called, and I can't find the thread.  I've tried searching several key words, and none have given me what I want (challenge, for example, yielded hundreds of results).  I need (want) the thread to make sure my general idea was right, and to find out what specifics were included.

The basic premise for the challenge was to separate your fort into three "zones."  The bio zone, the abyssal zone, and the fire zone (or some names like that).

The bio zone would be a full-fledged tower-cap forest, with underground ponds and generally anything that would give it a "foresty" feel.  This would take up 2-3 z-layers.

The abyssal zone would be as many layers as you could give it, where you mine out everything except columns on which your dwarves live and die.  The idea was to create a feeling of as vast a space as possible.

The bottom-most zone was to be the fire zone.  This 2-3 layer z-level was meant to give the impression of a sea of fire, so mine out the bottom of a magma pipe and wait for it to fill.  Then have platforms on which all your smithies are based.

So, this ring any bells?

It does. I think it was part of a general challenge thread, though. I don't think it had a thread of its own.

From what I remember, you have the basic idea right.

The Underworld Challenge.  I started a variation on it once, but got distracted by some other project or other.  I believe I still have that fortress saved somewhere...

Anyway, enjoy and good luck.

My thanks.  My entranced is placed over the bottomless pit, and digging of the bio layer has begun.  Strike the Earth!

Quick kind-of-related question:

If you make a sea of fire by hollowing several Z-levels around the magma pipe, would the whole lower level of the map slowly but inexorably fill, resulting in a flood in your abyssal zone one day or another? That would be pretty awesome...

No.  Magma doesn't flow up.  If you tap in at z-0, it won't go to z+1 no matter what.  At least, that's the way it's supposed to work...

No.  But I have  an idea.  Try linking each zone!  That's right, have braches off the columns going over the Bio zone, and have the columns go a the way down to the magma!

Yeah!  I just sounded stupid!  ;D
