Many simultaneous ambushes!?
« on: February 21, 2009, 03:04:08 am »

Just ran into something, I've got around 50 dwarves, a few years into the game. No goblin sieges yet. But that doesn't seem to matter since I ran into not 1, but 6 goblin ambushes...all at once! I counted at around 23 goblins dead when they got finished slaughtering themselves on my rows of traps. Is this normal? Think I read somewhere that sieges start in at 20 goblins. What happens if I get sieged and the same ambush scenario happens again, doubling their numbers?

Congratulations, the game decided that sieges are not hateful enough so it sent a stealth siege.

Not a real problem, as both ambushes and sieges vary wildly in numbers. I once got a siege consisting of what, 12 goblins? Another fortress got enough ambushes to have quadruple that number but no sieges.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Hi!

It is not that unusual, it seems. Actually, I gave up on a low-immigration fortress because I had so many ambushes I would have been thankful for sieges - but I would never reach the population needed for that. This, together with their stealth makes me think that ambushes are currently actually much worse than sieges.

So, no bug, but something you could call a balancing issue.

I think ambushes are much worse. Even my kobold fortress has been able to rout sieges with little effort, but we always lose some guys to ambushes. I'm considering putting patrols up ontop elevated walkways, since goblin archers/crossbowmen are rare and my archers easily outfight them anyways.

It's funny, in my 9 year fortress of 171 dwarves I've had about 5 sieges but only one ambush, which happened only recently. I wonder what the requirements for ambushes are.

I always lose some useless guy to ambushes, but with sieges it seems like I lose at least one champion every time.

Sieges might be a problem for places with outdoor components (like no indoor water source), but if you have the tolls to stay inside for a little, usually the siege spawns far enough away that you can order everyone inside, get archers to proper positions, and kick ass. Ambushes keep taking out my haulers who have had enough free time to become friends with half the fortress -_- Eventually I'm just going to keep constant patrols around the map to catch those ambushes :)
