Stopping a brook?
« on: January 30, 2009, 07:33:34 pm »

is it possible to make a brook flow slowly enough so i can build floodgates in it? pumping the water out of it only lowers it to a 5/7 and collapsing stuff on top of it does absolutely nothing.. help?

Well, first you need to designate a channel on the brook.  ON the brook.  that should get it so you have a place to actually put the floodgates (you know, cuz you dug into it).  You can walk over a brook, digging a channel into it makes it like a river, which would maker it easier (I think) to dam it. Try that first.

I remember reading somewhere that setting up pumps at the edge of the map on the brook, then setting up pumps at the spot you want to drain the water temporarily works well.

EDIT: I think they used 3 pumps at the brook entrance to stop it from continually refilling, then a pump at the location they wished to drain.

if you want to build inside the riverbed (brookbed?) you'll need to chanel the tiles from above. this can yield stones.

I have done this successfully, several times, by placing a line of pumps along the brook at the exact place I want to dam so that the pumps are pumping water out of the tiles which are going to become floodgate sites. Then I build walls to direct the pumped water away from the brook so that it doesn't just flow back in.

You should be aware that just as brook surface tiles act like floor grates, the tiles in the lower part of the brook are like fortifications; water flows through them, but you have to mine them out in order to move around and build things. This took me a while to figure out and confused me until I did.
