Am I missing something? When I downloaded the newest version, it was still 2D. From what I can tell from what has been said, it should be 3D.

It's a 2D view of a 3D world, viewed as a series of discreet slices, or z-levels.

In order to take advantage of the 3d effect, you must swap among those z-levels. Only one is displayed at once.

If you wanted a 3-d representation of Dwarf fortress... well lets put it this way - Your computer doesnt want a 3d representation of DF, and you need to work with your computer, not against it.

Representing a 3d dwarf fortress would require that it goes on multiple processing threads at once, which would completely BEAST the framerate up with those "i7" processors (8 threads at some ridiculous speed of like 2+ GHz *drools*).

So yeah, as previously stated, you get slices of the world that you cycle through with < and >.

It would also be nice to have a list of major overhauls in DF versions. For example, 2d to 3d is one, this one coming up with the revised combat system seems to be another, and i dont know about any others because i think i started on v0.27.169.33 or something recent.

I recall hearing a while back that the upcomming release would be only the 3rd save breaker in DF's history, and wondered "I know about the old 2d version, but what was the other save-breaker?".

Incidently, i have never actually played the 2d version. Would anyone recomend it? Or would i just miss the features from 3d?

Hi!

Well, playing the 3D version is simple as pie compared to the 2D version. It is much, much harder to get the hang of things and a lot of the easy shortcuts are missing.

However, the horizontal line-up of specific features has its own appeal and with varying thickness of the layers in between, the challenge level also varies (once you got past the first few starving fortresses :) :) :) :) ).

I think all in all, the 2D version had its own awesomeness based on being effectively a radically different game, and many things there are challenging enough to give you a feeling of achievement without making you miss the shortcuts of the 3D version too much.

I think you should give the 2D version a try, it is worth it as it is a completely different feeling. However, be prepared to lose your first few fortresses to starving and possibly permafloods.

I think Deathworks knows what I mean, I dont actually mean 3 dimensional, I just mean that in the last version i played (v 0.27.169.33g) there was a great deal of graphical changes. Instead of the usual ASCII art, there were actual pictures for most things. I dont remember getting an art pack, but other subtle changes made me think that it was in actually more than just art. The squares were a different shape and a few other things made me think that it was a major upgrade. What happened there?

Sounds like Mike Mayday's graphical pack.
Where did you download it from?

Thats the really werd part. I didnt. Or at least dont think i did. I remember the other large difference now:

The default keys were different. In my older version, the numpad was the default, and now the keyboard is. Its just perplexing to me.

This was a screen shot from someone using the same graphics pack, or whatever.

Sixty-two!  SIXTY-TWO of these friggin' buggers, over a third of my fort!

As far as I'm concerned, kids are nothing but household decorations with the ability to take a shit.
