I've been noticing a consistent bug in which the game loses track of certain items, even when stockpiled.  In my current game, this is occurring with individual/small lot bones that are being used for decoration.  In this situation, the crafts-dwarf is locked into a small group of chambers with bones, a workshop, food, decoratable items, and water.  Eventually, the 'Needs bones' message will arise; usually this will happen with several bones still available (and items lacking that bone type to put them on).  Forbidding and unforbidding the bones will make them visible to the game again, and some will be used when the repeated decorating task is re-started, and then the game will balk;  and so on, until all the bones are finally used.

In general, I've found that forbidding-unforbidding items can make just about anything visible to the selection interfaces, i.e. if there's a giant corkscrew right next to where one wants to build a pump and the stockpile is three caverns and a-maze-of-twisty-passages-all-alike away.  This makes me think, though, that things may be being popped back onto the front of a list/array that is leaking out the back.  If that makes any sense.

I had difficulty figuring out what to call this, so if I've failed to notice a previous bug report, my apologies.

(As a minor feature request, btw, it would be convenient if workshops were also searched by whatever algorithm searches stockpiles.)

Can you be a little more specific about for what purposes the item becomes "invisible"?  Can you see the item's actual tile, 'k' over it, see it in Stocks, etc?

Yes, it's completely visible with respect to 'k' and the main screen;  it just apparently cannot be found by a repeated task.  In general, I've found that items which are not in stockpiles are frequently 'invisible' to menus in which items are being selected for tasks or construction (stones, blocks, et cetera lying around).  This does not mean that they are literally invisible;  they just don't show up as an option.  I understand this is to be expected of tasked items;  I'm talking about untasked, unforbidden, undumping, unhidden items.

(In general, btw, the tasking seems somehow more aggressive in d9.  Not sure if this is just in my head or not.  The minute a corpse is dumped in a butcher's shop, being tasked for hauling to a stockpile, for instance, before butchery task can begin.  I don't want to distract from the more serious problem, though, just mentioning it.)

this sounds like a similar problem i've been having but with stone but not sure.

i have a zone set up near my craftsdwarf and mason shops where i dump all my stone, when i need a particular type of stone used i got to the stocks section and reclaim that stone, i've been doing a combination of things with the stone, making crafts, turning it into blocks or furniture and using it raw to make floors and walls.

however, at certain points i'll get a "soandso cancels create....:needs non-economic rock" so go back to the stocks and see of maybe i had dumped more of that type and it needs to be reclaimed again, instead though i see there's stone, and there's no "F" next to it. usually it would say "mudstone  230   F(either dark yellow for some of it is forbidden or bright yellow which means all is)" but it just "mudstone 230". i take a look at the pile itself and there's no mudstone so i'm wondering if it's not taking the stone used to build out of the inventory.

also i've noticed that if you happen to pick a site that has a cave, if you check your stock on threads you'll see whatever cave spider silk threads are in that cave even before you find it.

Were your bones in a stockpile, or were you using dumping them on location?

If they were dumped, then they may have generated jobs to go shift them to a stockpile. These jobs would prevent them being used until you canceled the job by forbid/claiming them.

(Personally, I think that wanting to use something should override wanting to store it, but thats a suggestion rather than a bug...)

AT least for constructions, you can pause, forbid/unforbid to drop the store task, and then it'll be usable in construction without hauling.

Don't know if you can do that for workshop things since I think a dwarf has to actually think "I can do task X at workshop Y, where are materials Z?" before the material gets tasked.
