Military Dwarves

I've been getting all of this iron chain armour from goblins and kobolds but when I tell my military dwarves to wear chain, they won't. Is this because the armour is too big for them or is there something else wrong?

Actually, it's too small. The best strategy here is to melt it or sell it.

If its "Narrow" or "large" dwarves can't wear it. A bit of a problem, but there you go.

No self respecting dwarf would wear goblin armor. You have dwarfinate it by melting it down and then resmithing it into dwarf armor.
