One possible use for the chasm is a dungeon entrance. Adventurers could periodicly visit the fortress and wonder around looking for adventure. Maybe the nobles can give out quests. If you have built a dungeon entrance the adventurers might take up residence in the fort and go on quests down there every so often in order to trade for goods from the dwarfs. Perhaps once the adventurer can no longer get better equipment from the dwarfs he might grow bored and leave the fort.

Edit: Oh look bloat16 heh.

you could dump a tone of water in the chasm as use it as a fish farm,

if you dump enough stone and magma in you could fill it in and turn it into usable space

Next version you could probably do both, assuming there still is a chasm landmark.
Massive lake, definitely. If the chasm has a reachable bottom, you can simply designate it as a water area and have your dwarves fill it. It'll just take a very very long time. :P Rewalling it would probably either require hardened magma or getting a route to the bottom and building for a very long time :P

Or you could reroute a couple of rivers and lakes to the chasm and let nature fill it up.

If you do that, and that it's successful... You might end up with a bit of a flooding problem if you just hook up a permanent source of water to the whole thing.  :p

Just to draw in an idea from another thread. You could drill for oil over the chasm. The black gold would obviously attract lots of unhappy chasm-dwelling types to your dwarven oil prospectors.
