I have a really good fortress now with about 20 Z-levels. I think I'm going to devote the bottom 3 to tombs.

I make a big labyrinth of one tile hallways randomly branching out from each other and then bury ordinary dwarves in niches in the walls.  Military or more epic dwarves get rooms that usually span several z-levels.

you people are inspiring me to try and make my dead dwarves have nicer resting places. i normally just give everyone save nobles several huge well engraved rooms with rows of nicely placed coffins. pets in seperate smaller but similar rooms. only really started doing it to avoid unhappy thoughts and tantrum spirals in case of surprise mass deaths.

last fort when i hit the HFS all my nobles tombs, which were stuck nearby to make them all more valuable, got trashed. the dwarves reburied the late kings bones with the peasants, which i liked. he was anoying.

current fort by chance has a cave on it, so i used it to bury people in initially because i had nowhere else that was indoors. its now become my labarynth graveyard, with hollowed out coal seams making more room, though this thread has inspired me to try sticking my military dwarves in iron coffins in a mountain peak magnetite cluster im digging through. and im trying to get my ludicrous number of war dogs stuck nearby.

any hints as to how to get certain dwarves buried in certain areas? processes people use to make sure their military get stuck in the right places? or do you very dedicated people actually give every last dwarf a tomb? because my industry tends not to support that sort of thing till late game, when i lose no dwarves anyway.

hope mr toady sticks in reburial options sometime soon. its so dissapointing having an area not quite ready for a champion or legendary dwarf, and having them end up buried somewhere random.

I have Low/Moderate effort for most dwarfs with High effort for Nobles, legendaries and any dwarves I happen to like.

Basically, the tombs tend to be my first - and largest- major construction project in my fortress. They have been in various forms, including stuff like a large series of 3x3 rooms undergound, with 5x5 rooms for nobles and the like. I also occasionally build catacombs made up of corridors lined with tombs, surrounding large 6x6 tombs for the special dwarves.

My latest burial plan is currently going by the name "Stiff City". I have been doing an above ground contruction for which the main feature is a complete lack of planning. Basically, its vaguely pyramid-shaped and made up of various sized rooms constructed on top of eachother in a completely haphazzard way. The fact that it is pyramid shaped is pretty much just because when I thought my tomb city was starting to get a bit big I began building a second level... ad then a 3rd etc... and each level was a bit smaller than the on below. Now I have a large pile of tombs, randomly stacked and all different sizes with a maze of corridors connecting them all and probably a vast fortune of gold locked inside.

Ensure that all dead dwarves got burried.
Find the dwarf you want relocated.
Remove coffin.
Designate coffin where you want the guy burried.
Profit.

High effort.  Champions and nobles all get their own engraved chambers that are furnished.  Everyone else goes into the mausoleum, but the mausoleum itself has its entry under my diverted river, right by where it pours into the chasm (just to the right of the bridge that makes my main entrance).  The entire river must be stopped to allow the dead to pass to their final resting place.  This entrance is underneath the grand garden where statues devoted to all of the gods of the fortress stand, on plinths of engraved stone among the plants.  Once inside the mausoleum, the wall to the right of the dwarf's coffin is engraved, shedding some light on the events of that time period.

Minimum effort here, they're transported outside or thrown down somewhere, but thats to keep the miasma away...  ;D

There are some exceptions, if it's a really awesome dwarf which deserves anything better.
