Most of the blizzard games are just decent and unbelievably overhyped. Apart from the truly awesome lost vikings  ;D

Pretty true... it is kinda odd... Appart from WoW Blizzard doesn't actually use its hype machine too much (Maybe Starcraft Ghost... but then again seeing any screenshot or gameplay movie immediately made it known that the game wasn't all that good)... but its games seem to generate its own hype like it had a nuclear hype generator.

I mean, just look at Starcraft II... it isn't all that great... but some of the fans are going crazy over it like it changed all that much.

Mind you... I said "Hyped" not "Bad"... Frankly I like Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo... (I like Vikings... but I was never all THAT good... but then again the game IS evil... so take that as you will)

Has anyone mentioned Doom 3?

Yes I know, native Doom 3 is neither co-op nor particularly amazing (especially when compared to its predecessors), but there's a mod for it called "Last Man Standing", which makes the game cooperative.

There are a couple different game modes, including standard co-op and their special "Last Man Standing", where your team is faced with an unending horde of monsters, and the only objective is to survive as long as you can.  Last man alive gets extra points.

They also add a couple new weapons, and some new monsters (just some modifications of the native ones).  I haven't tried it personally, but it sounds fun enough to give a shot at.  They've also got some gameplay videos to get people into it:

Other than that?  Left 4 Dead.  Yeah, yeah, everybody knows, but still...

Well, I know theres a coop mod for doom 3, but as I said in the first post, I'd rather not play another fps. Tbh, if you played one of them coop, the experience for the rest out there is rather similar.

also, system shock 2 coop mod. beats everything horror-coloured ;)

Yup, thats what I meant. The games are decent, maybe good. But not "great" at all. I mean, most of those games are just ripoffs of other stuff, with some bells and whistles and have been ripped off again by other folks.

And just to pick out diablo, I think its a nice example: we all played it, we all enjoyed it. But there are tons of clones of that clone that are better.

But "lost vikings" on the other hand... that struck me like lightning. I had never played a game like this before. I mean, I was a lot younger, maybe I'd think different today, but the way I remember it, the puzzles were great. the vikings were adorable (omg how olaf picked his nose!). You could say they took lemmings (which was creative when it came out: nobody saw a game like that before) and mixed it up with a generic jump 'n' run. But the way they pulled it off could definetly be described as "creating something new". I mean, just imagine, your boss says "Make us a game thats like super mario and lemmings in one". I can totally see that going wrong  ;D But they pulled it off and even got coop mode in. And coop mode, as forgotten as it is, should be one of the core elements of videogaming. I could write a whole essay about why and how. But I cba. Coop mode is very important, lets just leave it at that  ;)

Hm... As an expasion to this question... Has anyone seen a decent game that's co-op, and supports more than two people? Trying to find something to play with a group of three, but everything's got seemingly arbitrary limits as to how many people can play together.

If you dont mind shooters you can try F.E.A.R. Combat and Coop Warfare mod (beware there is some cd key error you can run into, thats perfectly normal. you need to manually copy a certain file, just google the error message when it comes up)

I think you can coop with 8 people max.

Then there is Ghost recon:advanced warfighter 2 (dunno much about part 1); you can coop with like what? 32 people there?

Heh, going way back 2 pages ago.. I'd have to stand by my support for DoTA. It's not a fun game if you're playing to win.. rather more fun played casually, without worrying about pseudo-random distribution, perfect item/hero combos, that sort of thing. It's overhyped, but played by everyone simply because it's good fun.

Damn, good co-op games are hard to get. I'd appreciate it too if there were more. I suppose picking up a MUD or MMORPG is great too.

I could probably say it was inspired by Lemmings. Having played Lemmings though I don't see a strong enough resemblence for it to have taken anything from Lemmings. (Afterall... Lemmings doesn't have enemies, you don't control the lemmings, the Lemming games are based on changing the environment to suit your goals, and you can have Lemmings die and still reasonably win)

Though it is odd... of all the characters... the Warrior is the least useful as the other two Vikings can kill enemies. (One by a bull rush and the other by a sumo slam attack!)

IIRC you need the arrow to solve quite a few puzzles you cannot complete otherwise, not sure tho. And yea, lemmings is quite a long shot, but I thought if you really want to pick something "Lost vikings" ripped off, you end up there.

I think there weren'T that much puzzle platformers back then.

Oh, and while it'S completely offtopic... any of you guys played and probably even loved "pushover"? I think that's a really nice game.

DoTA casually,

If really want to play an AoS, (DoTA's genre, Age of Strife, named after the original) play EoTA, which is at least balanced and different.

People play DoTA because of how mind-numbingly simple it is, it's the same 3-paths map where everyone chooses the same overpowered characters and the same overpowered build.

It WAS fun (and had the potential to be something great) before Icefrog stole it, but now I'm just ranting.
