That sounds reasonable. If there was an aquifer directly below the dirt tiles, that could make the damp enough to support tree growth.

does this only work with aquifers? or if I were to flood the layer under a desert would I start seeing trees crop up in it. (or at least cactai)?

In other words, can I affect the "dampness" setting of an area or is it fixed at worldgen?
