[40c] objects in flow sometimes vanish, but still exist
« on: December 07, 2008, 02:37:00 am »

Repeatedly in my latest fort, I've had objects vanish, but still exist.

1.  I had a marksdwarf shoot a couple goblins that were standing in a dry murky pool I'd drained.  On death, there were multiple stuck-in bolts left in them.  During a rainstorm, objects shifted.  I could zoom to one of the bolts using the stocks screen, but the 'k' view of that tile had nothing.  I unforbade the area, and that got them unforbidden, but still invisible.  I unhid the area, to no effect.  I made an ammo stockpile, and my dwarves went to the apparently empty square and picked up a bolt.  They also picked up much more narrow junk than I expected, presumably also invisible.

2.  Four goblins left their clothes littering my main underground hallway, so I poured magma through it.  Some of the clothes burned, others vanished.  But then, a year later, I had images seen and some of the magmaed clothes were picked up and decorated!  The stocks screen revealed that there were still narrow clothes, some on fire, near but just downstream of where the goblins had fallen.  No smoke though, and after forbidding, no more mystery narrow clothes appearing.  But even several years on, the !!narrow crap!! is still there.

3.  I have a number of molten obsidian I can zoom to.  They have been on my list forever.  It's hard to say for sure these were moved by the flow.

Item 3 sounds a lot like a known bug with a note that you needed a save before the event.  I can't provide any saves for this report, sadly: no internets at home except on my phone.

Not to imply that this bug was fixed for 40d, but is that why you're running 40c?

Can confirm that it occurs, I have quite a few patchs of molten rocks where magma flowed for just long enough to melt it. It shows as liquid in stocks screen and am running 40d, nothing shows up when zoomed and k'ing over it other than just the floor type. Not sure if keeping it under magma for longer makes it go away completelly.

Had this happen to a piece of clothing that was in a flooded room, the owner spammed cancelling storage of owned item because of this until I finally drained and opened the room during reconstruction (Noticed there was some water around the door too, and I searched the water, in case someone fell in, but nothing but mud, even after draining, but the spam stopped around then ) I think I had something similar happen with a steel bolt that was left in a pond for few years, then drained out, but I didn't observed it closely, just that I didn't see it anywhere around where it was drained, even though no dwarves had access and there wasn't any flow strong enough to carry it too far.

Yeah, I think I've seen all of these, and I've also received after-the-fact saves for them, but it wasn't enough to figure it out.  I really don't know what's going on, which is why I had the "miracle save" request posted.  I wasn't never able to get a reproduction myself.

I hate to keep dragging up this old post, but I could very easily get that set up again and post the save if you want it, assuming that it still "works" (that was back in 33f... yikes!).

Yeah, if there's a way to get a save that can be used to reproduce the problem as it's happening that would be very useful.

This actually happened to me recently in one of my 40d forts, only not in the magma.  When I noticed it, it was in my drowning trap corridor.  I had opened the gates to let the goblins in, and the dwarves started running out, despite the fact that I had forbidden everything topside.  Then one by one, they would stop, then double back, suddenly holding an item that just wasn't there before.  And this was in an area that had water flowing over it and draining out frequently.

Yup, it still works. Here's the save, and here's a video. Note that I didn't leave the video running until the water had all drained out; last time I did that, it took way too long and the video file was huge. I presume (though I will admit that I didn't test it this time around) that they still don't show up after the water leaves, which was the case back in 33f.
