newbie comments
« on: December 22, 2008, 03:16:59 am »

I just discovered and started playing this game two nights ago.  I'm enjoying it quite a bit,  I have many more thoughts, which i'll probably type later, but right now I notice four elements that, historically speaking, had some historical significance and which are not currently present in the game

1. Bombings!(especially symbolic bombings, and bomb-making as a skill.  This is a huge one)
2. communiques
3. LSD
4. orgies

I'll take this one at a time.

1. Planned. Coding this sort of thing isn't easy and maintaining some semblance of balance is extremely hard.

2. Not sure what you mean by this. You tell your followers what to do. Every once in a while your sleepers warn you of attacks and can leak you info and equipment if you tell them to.

3. Drugs during interrogation and brownies. I'm especially fond of the brownies.

4. Dating. Sex so good, you quit your job and die for the person sexing you up.

Edit: Just realized that I actually have a direct quote in the game. YAY for vicarious immortality. Kind of an odd feeling.

Perhaps cinque is refering to how communications are perfect in the game.  This person might want to see a little miscommunication introduced into the game.

EDIT: NOT ME, I LIKE HOW COMMUNICATION IS HANDLED CURRENTLY.

communique - a taped message sent to media outlets which explains your philosophy and/or recent actions.

LSD - i'd bet it played a big role in converting Patty Hearst to the SLA cause, and I imagine it influenced the 60's and 70's radical groups in regards to their view of the feasibility of very small groups overthrowing the government.  Perhaps it could be used here to increase to increase heart and/or wisdom and to aid in conversion.  You would have to get it from pushers who could be "narcs," etc.

orgies - historically used to strengthen espirit de corps and to "smash monogamy."  Here it could perhaps somehow aid the former as a positive and turn off some squad members as a negative

How I got here:  last week I watched the documentary film Guerrilla - The Taking Of Patty Hearst with some relatives.  We agreed that, if nothing else, the story of the Symbionese Liberation Army would make for a great computer or video game.  Lo and behold, I discovered that there actually is one!!! ;D  I'm really into history.  I like playing Strat-O-Matic computer basketball and baseball because they use actual players and try to make them play as accurately as possible.  Therefore, I really appreciate this game's customization features - it's one of my favorite things about it.  I like how I can immediately input "death to the fascist insect that preys upon the life of the people" or "bring the war home!" as my slogan.  Certainly, any left-wing extremist group would scoff at using the word "liberal" in its name, so that's quickly replaced with a real-life organization.  Best of all, whenever I make a new recruit, I like how i'm able to check his or her stats and match them up with an actual Symbionese Liberation Army, Weather Underground, or Black Panther Party member and use their name.  I do this for any person with composite skill level of 7 or higher.

more ideas . . .

Last night I read the official police report on the May 17, 1974 SLA/LAPD shootout, and I found three more elements that could possibly be put to use here:

tear gas, gas masks - the LAPD fired tons of it into the house in order to flush them out, but it didn't work.  In fact, all 6 SLA members were wearing gas masks at the time of their deaths

liberal mobs - a number of times during the shootout, officers manning the perimeter had to call for backup because mobs were starting to form and bricks and rocks were being thrown.  If you are popular enough and in the right neighborhood, maybe liberals in your location could come to your aid during a fight

guerrilla training manuals - used prodigiously by leftist revolutionary groups.  Here, they could be used to increase skills.  You would have to obtain them from libraries and bookstores.  Perhaps a Patriot Act element could then be introduced as a counter, etc.

I agree with those who think race, gender, and sexual orientation should play a role here

One last little thing - police officers are referred to as "conservative swine."  Obviously, that's a euphemism for the correct term, but if the purpose is to keep things I light I understand.

Anway, thanks for the game and thanks for listening

Are you playing Toady's version or 3.18?

My quote in the game is the activation message for brownie selling.

Oh, that's what a communique is.

Well, the Liberal Guardian acts as the mouthpiece of the LCS, and the LCS can raid the AM Radio or Cable News and actually broadcast their properganda all over the nation (especially if they take hostage a News Anchor anchor in order to boost ratings). I mean, it is a good idea, but when you own your own newspaper that takes credit for any terrorist activty you do, well...

If you are playing Toady One's version, they might not have it. In the current version, right here, you can build a printing press at a safehouse for $3000 and be able to write for the Liberal Guardian. You can also write letters to the editor without a printing press, but they'd be less effective.

Oh, and thanks for joining. :)

Toady's version has the printing press for $5000, and doesn't show what the Liberal Guardian says.  It also works automatically, not allowing you to assign writers.

Yeah, pick up the new version, it's the bomb!

Yes, the newest version is pretty far-out!

Another idea based on real-life:  armorer skills.  The SLA had Vietnam vet Joe Remiro, who converted all their semi-automatic weapons to automatic.  Also, perhaps you could saw off a shotgun for more power and less accuracy.

also - are there any Liberal war veterans in the game?

I found several liberal Army Veterans in the Apartments, so, yeah, they exist. War Veterans are usually conservative, but since the country was becoming more liberal, these War Veterans were also Liberal.

I never recruited these War Veterans though, since I didn't really need any shooters.

I haven't noticed a particular bias either way among the vets in LCS.  I see plenty of moderates too.  I'm wondering what war they are vets from.  They're generally too old for the first gulf and too young for 'Nam.  Apparently a lot of people's lives were defined by those two days of fighting on Grenada.
