The Continuing Effort
« on: April 18, 2002, 10:58:00 pm »

I've finished most of creature variations finally -- there was a brief pause to celebrate my birthday on the 17th.  Aside from a few loose ends (maybe an hour's worth), we are now down to

a) Growths in combat (Teeth!)
b) Save/Load

Then the next version will be ready.

Not that I haven't screwed up Alanor's birthday date before.  I've known way too many February people.

Almost 1/4 of a century old...  <shudder>

Critters have teeth now.  It should be easy to make them used in attacks.  I'm having a little trouble with claws -- there is a claw at the each of every finger, so swiping something with your entire hand would constitute attacking with 4-5 separate body parts.  To the program, this is no different than attacking with two fists at the same time.  So, if we want attacking with more than one claw now, I'll have to expand the whole combat interface a bit.  Teeth don't have that problem, since they are all part of the same "growth" in the mouth.

Right before I started teeth, I tried to realize the different individual creature sizes in the models, but they turned into jumbled messes when they started walking.  That'll be on the back burner for a while :)

So, now 2 weapon fighting will be useful?  We can attack with both at once?  One other thing: we need to be able to 2-hand a weapon!  A titan could hold onto his freakin sword if he could use both his hands. Then you could put new and horribly evil weapons in.

You can 2-hand a weapon if you drop it and pick it back up with both hands :)  There's so much left to program!  ACK!

You can't attack with two weapons yet -- I still need to do all that "attack group" stuff for claws.  But yeah, I should probably put that in before I put up the next one, because claws will be really silly if you have to pick exactly one to attack with.  It makes the behemoth slaughter-beast seem...  dainty.

But does 2 handing it DO anything?  More force?  Easier to keep hold of it, etc?

Yeah.  It should make it much easier to hang on to.  Attack strength from your body currently adds up the total movement strength from every body part -- you can get much more power from using your hips, upper body, etc. than from your arm alone.  However, I'm not sure how to square this with 2H weapon use...  the problem is more subtle than just adding stuff together -- it already adds in the movement strength from the arm you aren't using (as you might know from doing something like karate, you can use both arms to increase the power of a one-armed punch), but if you actually had that arm directly helping a swing, it should help even more.  It'll take a bit more planning to figure it out.  One of the major benefits is currently that you can wield larger weapons with two hands...  well, it would be a benefit if more weapons existed -- maybe for kobolds it is a current benefit :)  2Hs should also help a lot with accuracy and control...  playing baseball with one arm on the bat would be harder I think.  All of the calculations are not quite transparent enough to make it possible for the player to decide anyway.  There's a lot left to be done here, as with everything.
