I was just playing around with the world gen, and the running water seems to be the problem with getting those kind of cliffs. Even with 0 for the erosion cycle, and no periodic erosion of cliffs, they end up with ramps all over the place and tend to only be a few Z-levels high. So unless get really lucky with a Gen, I don't think you will find a map with sheer cliffs and running water unless you manage to get lucky next to a mountain lake. Especialy if you want magma.

The world with that crazy cliff had 1 river total in it with 2 maybe 3 brooks total as well.

Yeah, I noticed the lack of streams/rivers. However, I would be just as happy with an underground river I think.

To sum up my (mostly) ideal start:

Steep cliffs, with a valley, magma, underground/above ground running water. The start you linked earlier is 'perfect' in that regard.

The 'perfect' start would be something like... steep cliffs - valley - steep cliffs (like the graph of cosign) + magma/water.

Now, back to finals. I can't wait until next week when all this studying is over and I can spend my break messing around with DF.

Thanks for all the replies guys ^_^ and thank you for that lovely map gen script as well ^_^

Kind of not what the topic is about anymore but as far as I remember, sheer cliffs are smoothed out now to avoid path finding problems as someone already said, but also to make it so there aren't dozens of unreachable places in Adventure mode, what with climbing not being in yet and all.
