Progress of Civilizations
« on: December 13, 2006, 07:24:00 pm »

So, i was reading the Future of the Fortress, and saw several cases where the game-worlds time would be advanced on the scale of centuries. Wouldn't it be a bit strange, say if you play a LOT of games on a world, causing 11 centuries worth of advancing events, and people make common use of bronze swords when the game date is 2150? This might be impossible to fix, but its something kind of weird anyway.

Just a quick thought, but most "Fantasy" universes tend to have Bronze/Iron/etc ages last 1000+ years easily....Plus with magic being a possibility it's very acceptable from a gameplay standpoint to have a world never quite  come out of the middle ages and use magic to replace electronics or other tech.

.......Yeah that was a fairly nerdy response, but I couldn't help myself :D

In the game, considering the dwarves pride in making stuff, and their ready access to steam, I would think they wouldnt say no to industrialization...... except theyd have to dig tunnels to vent the pollution.   :p

This brings up a question. What is the default tech levels for the various societies? Humans seem to be in the bronze age, with some iron work (that may or may not be their own). Dwarves, I've not messed about enough with in adventure mode to find out. Elves neither.

Elves are like, gatherers/traders.  They don't seem to like metal, or harming plants at all.

Dwarves live in mountains and I would believe they have knowledge of alloys like steel, making them potentially the most advanced.

That is an interesting point about elves. They don't seem to care for harming trees, but they sell cloth and sometimes gathered foods. One wonders how they regard hunting, given they don't seem to complain when I send death squads out to eliminate the deer and unicorns.

Dwarves seem to be at the high end of an iron age.
I guess I would consider elves to be about stone age.

Of course, this is all tentative speculation until towns and civs and whatnot are fully fleshed out.

I'd like to see marble columns and stone towers in one city thatch roofed cottages and sheeps in others.

If you've ever tried trading with them, I'm sure you've noticed that they get all huffy if you try to sell them something made of bone, so I only imagine they'd dislike how you got the bones in the first place too.

However, that said, they currently don't care about hunting - I wouldn't be surprised if at some point in the future they'd dislike you for that, too.

The elves are pretty much self-enforced stone-agers though. They COULD be bad ass iron users, but their environmentally concious side keeps holding them back.

One also wonders where they get their leather from...

[Anyways, as for the advancement of civs, it'd definitely be interesting to 'fast forward' time by creating and abandoning several hundred fortresses (obviously, with a bot) and see if the dwarves manage to kill all the demons and use their adamantium prisons, or unleash some terrible evil on the world that the technically-weak humans and elves have to deal with.]

Im thinking of making an industrial age mod that replaces bows with guns and makes the swords out of better material (steel equipment) and also some nifty stuff, maybe setting the raw speed really low when doing a fortress, giving the effect of having your guys travel around in steam powered carts rather than on foot, mine with drills rather than picks, produce items in workshops much faster giving the effect of industrial machinery. Then again, ive never messed with speed in the raws before for a fortress, it would be an idea though, but with some strange things if the speed effects EVERYTHING, such as: eating at a multiple speed, i dont think fast food was really around in 1800s, short sleep duration, i dont think dwarves would substitute their booze for coffee, and short breaks.... well actually that is accurate considering most workers of the 1800s got no breaks at all compared to whats enjoyed in the real world today.

If so, then you NEED to play Arcanum before you get started on this mod.

...Well, at least read about it. Get the manual too, there's an awesome segment where scientific experiments are performed close to magic, and describes the effects of why magic and science collide more than, "shaman haet teh train cuz it has no spirit."

Elves are probably going to have the most magic power though.  Maybe you can outsource enchanting jobs to them when they come to visit

I read about arcanum, interesting ideas. Although, until magic is really implimented in DF, I dont see much of a reason to concern myself with it... i could make magic attacks be ranged weapons, but that would be faulty in a- it would require physical ammo, b- a spell would work the same way as a gun

Although it would be interesting to have the mountain civs have tech, the forest ones have magic, and the plains one have a balance of both.
