HFS Difficulty
« on: December 08, 2008, 06:36:23 pm »

So I opened up my first HFS area today and ran into half a dozen SoF.  On the flip side, my squad of six highly trained soldiers tore them apart in less than a minute.  This was with my soldiers charging at them down a long, straight, hallway.  I lost one soldier to a head shot that took out his throat and another used her baby (which she was carrying) to block a few shots, leaving the baby dead and her with broken arms.  All things considered, it was much less epic than I was expecting.  Any thoughts?

For reference, my six dwarves are all legendary armor users, legendary shield users, legendary wrestlers, legendary marksdwarves, legendary axedwarves, legendary spear users, legendary pump operators, legendary siege operators, and legendary engravers.  Their attributes are maxed out and they are all wearing steel plate over steel chain, carrying steel shields and wielding steel battle axes; all of which is masterwork quality.

Well, there's your problem.

And thus did the dream of dwarven antigravity fade away, not with a massive explosion or a flood of magma, but with a whimper.

I'm going to be depressed all day now.

I suppose my military is a little too beefy.  Oddly, it only took about four years to train them up.  I started with fifteen, but lost three to goblin accidents before they became ungodly strong.  Not that the three died, but one is still unconscious and the other two are only fit for Royal Guard or Fortress Guard duty.  Strangely, one of the latter is now my Mayor, having displaced one of the founding seven in a populist upset.

Don't feel bad Maltray... Even without Champions the Lesser Demons are as easy as pie.

Only one of the three lesser demons has any difficulty and that is due to the game's horrible handling of fire.

If I were to Venn diagram dwarf fortress difficulty, it would have three circles:

1) Impossible challenges
2) Possible challenges
3) Challenges which are trivial with suitable preparation

Circles 2 and 3 would be the same circle.

The fights are what you make them.  If you want a challenge, then you need to start restricting yourself, because there is no fight on Armok's blood-soaked earth that cannot be solved trivially with a collapsing ceiling, for instance.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.
