Any tabletop roleplayers know of a good digital battle-grid?
« on: February 28, 2011, 03:50:35 pm »

I don't know about anyone else, but I find miniatures to be too expensive to be worth it.  I love nearly all aspects of tabletop RPGs, but miniatures are not my thing.  So I'm wondering if anyone knows of any kind of very simple digital battlegrids.  Preferably with no rules built into it.  It would be nice if it were browser based, flash, or some other program which is not limited to only one operating system.  All it really needs to be is a grid with movable tiles which represent characters.  It would be nice if each tile/character could have a personal notepad for information like HP and debuffs.  Multi z-level support would be cool too.  The graphics don't need to be anything more than ASCII.

If I knew anything about coding, I would write this myself.

Help is much appreciated!

Well, they do exist. I haven't had any luck with getting them to work.

Vassal is meant to play table top strategy games, and board games. It doesn't come with any rules or tiles.

And there are a few programs like Gametable, which come with pogs for PC and NPC Avatars as well as set pieces.

GameTable has been my favorite for a few years.  I like it because it is so easy to use, runs on just about anything, and doesn't include a load of junk you don't need.

MapTool, Gametable, and OpenRPG are the ones I've looked at, though I've never really gotten to try them out.

Yep, Gametable is pretty much exactly what I was looking for.  Really appreciate the help, folks!
