well guess what thats right anooother question just wanted to jaze it up a bit mmmk so i cant really grasp how to make miltiary i now right now i dont need em but how do i make em i got miners from mining so i thought maybe a dwarf becomes a warrior from fighting so i made him a hunter and the deer or something kicked the crap out of him and hast woken up since also i havent encountered any thing other then deer i think. if you wondering what i mean i haven't seen any cobalts goblins humans or what not im thinking my world is new so there isn't many of em. Im sorry for this thread its gotten bigger then expected im just so fascinated by this game and this are questions that are bugging me threw out the day so you'll have to excuse me.
You need to select an individual dwarf and activate them for military service. At that point, you can go to the military screen and either assign them to squads or decide what weapons and armor, if any, you want them to use. From the military screen you can select a squad, choose where they sleep, how much food and water they carry, whether the squad is on duty or off duty, zoom in on the squad commander, etc. Zooming in on the squad commander allows you to decide where to post the squad when they are on duty. I would read about the Fortress Guard and Royal Guard on the Dwarf Fortress Wikipedia before messing with either one.
Miners will develop mining skill. Hunters will develop a combination of skills, including ambushing, marksdwarfship, etc. The more skills a dwarf has, and the higher those skills are, the more attributes a dwarf will have, and the higher those attributes will be. A dwarf who is strong, agile, and tough will be better at pretty much any job, skill being equal, than a dwarf who is not strong, agile, and tough.
That said, soldiers will develop skills in whatever armor and / or weapons you assign them. Keep them off duty for a while, with a barracks nearby, and they will spar in the barracks. However, start them on something easy, like holding shields, wearing armor, and wrestling barehanded. Otherwise your new recruits will get into all sorts of fatal and career ending accidents with their sharp toys. When they've developed some skills and some attributes, up the ante and hand out weapons. Expect at least a few recruits to fail this process and end up permanent invalids. Their position in your military hierarchy hearkens back to the Fortress Guard and Royal Guard I mentioned before.
now im not getting any stone i know why but i dont know what it is. t the start of my campaign i clicked embark and it sayed this area has aqua (something like that) it might be hard to find stone
hope your enjoying these massive amount of questions
your friendly neighborhood noob (that's right i know where you live) Begory
You mean an aquifier. Basically the water table on your map. Geologically speaking, at a certain depth, say x, there is water. This will occur when you dig into anything soft at or below that level, such as peat, moss, loam, sand, etc. Since an aquifier tends to have infinite water, and water pressure is rarely your friend, you can tap into your aquifier unexpectedly and easily flood your fortress, maybe even your entire map. Further, since rock tends to be a couple levels down on most maps not in the mountains, you somehow need to dig through or around the peat and moss at and below the aquifier level to get to your stone. This often requires a fair degree of creativity and the deaths of many dwarves before you get the hang of it.
