Welcome!

The most fun is had when you embark beside a terrifying ocean, trust me.
How dangerous can a fish with no skin be anyway?

It will be a sad sad day when Toady weakens them.

Welcome Christian, sounds like you already got past the part of the "addiction" that scares off the weaker humans of the world.  Soon you will grow a beard, have an unnatural craving for things made of kitten leather, drink more beer and less water and stay up until 4 in the morning reading about the history of a randomly generated world.

Like others said, the wiki is your friend.  Forums are also useful, best to do a quick search before you ask a question though, some of the more common questions folks get tired of hearing every day and they will pounce on you like ninja elephants.  Otherwise the community is helpful and intelligent.  Unlike the rest of teh intarnetz.

May you have much fun with your fortresses before they explode spectacularly into red "2"s, purple clouds, exploding booze, green "g"s, and mountains of red or blue "7"s in places red or blue "7"s should not be.

Try staring a 2x2 fortress with one corner having a river, one with a magma pipe, one with a mountain, and the last one with woods.  It's a good start that can be alot of fun for slow computers too.  The creatures in the magma are dangerous though, so look out.  ;D

I got the sims 2 today in the mail,

played it for a hour,

turned it off

and turned Dwarf Fortress back on

Hehe. Games like The Sims are becoming increasingly hard to appreciate (for me) as Dwarf Fortress begins to do what they do and more. Initially it was just Dungeon Keeper and such, but it's expanding quickly. Eventually it'll be NetHack and who knows what else.

Maybe one day we'll have Dwarffortlikes.

Eventually we will start to get games that will get closer and closer to Dwarf Fortress once we hit the barrier of unimproving graphics. (We arn't that far away...) thus Graphics will start to stop being such an issue

HOPEFULLY perhaps this will spark the revival of the Live Action Adventure game! I love those!

Nop, I am pretty sure, that the game dev companies won't release a game like DF ever. It simply wouldn't sell good. Complexity and deep gameplay is not for the masses. DF is a typical indie game....the best indie game while we are at it.  :D

Anything that looks even moderatly hard will draw off millions of sales.

'Tis true, but sad truth.
