Ants and Bees in Frozen Biome
« on: December 02, 2008, 03:26:41 am »

This is a Legendary Lands world, though I don't think that's relevant.

I'm at an intersection of Tundra, Freshwater Marsh, and Temperate Shrubland, all Temperature==Freezing.  And there are ants.  And bees.  It's weird.

Consider that I have seen ants in an obsidian surrounded magma pipe with no prior surface exposure, and people have spotted anthills on native metal floors. These are not your garden variety ants...

Yeah, this is Bug 480.  As long as you have ants from some biome (in this case the marsh and shrubland, where it is not freezing water at all times), all of the biomes, like the tundra, will have ants.

Is this really such a buggy bug? As long as these animals wander around in the summer. Finland's full of ants and bees even when the ground freezes in the winter. Actually, it's very uncommon for topsoil to remain frozen all year round. Doesn't happen up in Longyearbyen (78 deg N) at least.

Tundra climates ordinarily fit the Köppen climate classification ET, signifying a local climate in which at least one month has an average temperature high enough to melt snow (0°C or 32°F), but no month with an average temperature in excess of (10°C/50°F).

http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/exhibits/biomes/tundra.php even says things like bees can be expected on tundra.
