How do you and why?
« on: April 18, 2002, 12:05:00 pm »

How?
1. How do you talk?
2. How do you eat/drink?
3. How do you get spells?

Why?
1. Why is everyone exept my own race hostile?
2. Why is my own race following me?
3. Why does my character fall down every single time he attacks?
4. Why isnīt there any water in the lakes?

Thatīs all for now. Might come up with some more annoying newbie questions soon :)

The main answer to all of your questions is that the game is 3% finished...  this is very much a work in progress.  For an idea of what is left to be added, you can look at the plan here:

THE PLAN

I'm hoping to get through most of that by the end of the year.  You'll find talking, eating, magic, and water there.  Right now, I've mainly been testing combat, so every creature that isn't your race is there to be fought, and creatures that are your race just act stupid (although that following behavior can be used to lead packs of them to enemy towns if you are lucky enough to get one nearby).

I'm not sure why your character falls down when he attacks -- normally if there is a falling-over bug it won't wait that long.  Is it possible you yourself were hit by your opponent?

There's a little bit of online help if you press H or the question mark in the lower right once you start the game, although it is fairly impoverished.

Look for an actual game here in a year or two :)

Weird -- I'm having errors posting now.  The last message I posted here didn't show up in the post count (it was still at 485).  I'm not sure what's going on...

You can also attack a lot easier by going to combat mode:  either press '2' or just click on the (diagonal) sword that is in the column of buttons on the far left of the button area.  There are also rotate, target, and look modes in that column.

Combat mode:  in the main view area (where you see your character), you can right click to attack and hold down left button to move.

Rotate mode:  right click to rotate, hold down left button to move.

I think the instructions for these modes might appear in that help screen that I told you about.  Any way, look/target aren't so interesting, although looking at a creature can tell you what weapon it is holding, for instance.

If you are in turn-based mode -- attacking somebody in combat mode will make you walk over to them and wack them once.  In real time, you will fight to the death (or you can, say, switch to turn-based or left click to stop).

To get to real time and back, click on the "Your Turn" button in the lower right or press 'R'.

Oh, and yeah, unfortunately, it's a long wait, BUT you may have noticed on the plan page that there will be lots of releases along the way.

Is there an effective way to move creatures. When i wanted to invade another city, i scooped up alot of same-race-as-me creatures (Behemoths) and when i went in to the travel mode they disappeared. If making creatures follow you in travel mode havenīt been implemented yet, you might want to work on that.

I'm afraid of posting on this thread because I've had all my posting errors here, but anyway :)

There's no effective way to move creatures now -- the only way to get massive combats to occur is to start with two overlapping empires, which in turn might have overlapping or nearby towns -- then you can lead your army by hand.  I think in the version that is up now, Demon's seed #10 works -- there's a kobold/moledog overlap, so play either of those races and you should be able to lead an army.

Other than that, it isn't really a huge priority to get leading armies like that working, since the current same-race AI is savagely bad.  In The Plan, a little ways down the list, there are parties and things like that.  First I need to get rid of human tails :)

And as my kobold general runs a few seconds ahead he gets smacked in the head and passes out. Just as the final blow is to be delivered my army kills the enemy. And my kobold lies there bleeding without any ways to die  :( .

It should abstract time until you die or wake up if there's nobody targeting you.  I'll have to look into that.  You can press shift+Q to quit if it comes to that.
