website critique
« on: December 14, 2008, 05:19:02 pm »

My brother created a website for our robotics team several months ago. Only problem is we don't get enough traffic to tell what parts of it people find interesting or not.  I saw a very useful critique of a person's webcomic here so I was hoping the same could be done for my website.

It looks pretty good. The first suggestions that came to my mind were;

1. Reduce the size of the copyrights. They look unprofessional.

2. Putting all those links (site map, sponsors, etc) along the side might look nicer. Your call. In the same vein, making them all black on yellow might look better than black on yellow alternating with black on gray.

Honestly, the fellow before me has pointed out all the real problems.

Still, I must stress that dark black on light black is a bad choice.

Those are good points, my brother agree that with changing them.

Multiple exclamation marks at the end of a sentence burns my eyes.

In fact, exclamation marks in general should be toned down.

Also:

Looks really weird in that picture.

Is it the logo that looks weird or is it the person or the expression?
The exclamation points are there for the same reason as the neon yellow shirts: bad taste is hilarious.

It's the person, that whole, "half-smile, half-thumbs-up, freaky evil-eye" thing.

They've pointed out most of it...
but remember, you're not going to get -that- much traffic. I mean, there aren't many people that know about this robotics team, and those who do, they won't need to visit the site very often in the first place.

My personal exclamation point policy
Mild excitement or surprise: "I sure do love cakes!"
Extreme excitement or surprise "My Goddamn legs are gone!!!"

NEVER, EVER TWO. "I am retarded and make doo-doo in my pants!!"
THAT IS WRONG.

You forgot the third acceptable use of exlamation marks:
!!I'm on fire!!
And the fourth, mocking hax0rz:
Me is HaX0R!!!1!!!

Edit:
Actual critique. The site looks okay on my first glance through. However, on the site map page, the background picture cuts off before the bottom. It's a cool concept for the background, but the cut off is distracting.
On the about us page you mention FIRST a lot, but what does FIRST mean? I might link the the first mention of it to somewhere.

The truth of your words is deep, and wide. BUT NEVER LONG.

I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. It's a bad idea to post things when you've been awake more than 16 consecutive hours.

And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Exclamation Key. Then shalt thou add but three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt add, and the number of the adding shall be three. Four shalt thou not add, neither add thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then released thou thy Exclamation Key of Antioch.

But yes, the background on the site map also defies the whole "No light Grey behind dark Grey!" rule.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

That is right, but I like the idea quite a bit. One more critique before I go to bed. I was tring to get an overall feel for the website, but I felt sort of overwhelmed by it all. It would be nice if there was an introduction page that (with non-changing or updating text) outlined the teams purpose and things.
