One thing I noticed though is that i often get people from my royal or fortress guards sparring with the big boy champions. It is ridiculously dangerous for these fools is there any way besdies making them marskdwarves to save their nervous system from permanenet damage?

Well if the Champs are military, then put them on duty untill the Guards get better. It's a bit harder to work the other way sadley but yeah...

Really skillled weapon users have much lower odds of causing injury during sparring.

And when up against clumsy newbies, the skilled veterans should also have good odds of routinely deflecting or dodging dangerous attacks, if you've trained them right.

I encountered my first titan the otherday with a routine patrol that had a legendary swordsman and champion spearmaster in the group and they got flippin slaughtered.   Not one injury was caused to the titan and 7 dwarves with 3 wardogs all gone..  I try to get my other squads there in time to save them and two of my marksman squads of 5 show up; actually, only 2 show up cause the other three decided it was a good time to slack.  One dies and the other one apparently gets a lucky hit and the Titan starts to Flee...   Needless to say the one marksdwarf kills the titan as it flees and then promptly bleeds to death.  Then the other three dwarves show up and are all happy to have take part of slaughter but are sad at losing their friends.

So.. I'm thinking crossbows are a great way to go...

Also, it was probably his throat getting slashed out.

If that was the case, it would say that he would bled to death. Having your throat slashed out in DF strangely does not cause bleeding problems.

And thus did the dream of dwarven antigravity fade away, not with a massive explosion or a flood of magma, but with a whimper.

I'm going to be depressed all day now.

bah if you wanna be "safe" traps and elaboratee dwarven machines reduce risk to a minimum. Although it can take away the "ohoh there goes my champion's arm!" factor.

Heh, you think that's bad? A human swordmaster who wasn't even a local leader one-shotted a champion in one of my forts.

Only in Dwarf Fortress would you try to catch a mermaid to butcher her and make trophies out of her bones

Pft, I once had a 1st-year caravan taken down by a kobold thief.

He got a lucky stab in on two of the wagons, destroying both. A freaking kobold, kittens can kill kobolds.

Then again I also saw one get run over by two wagons in a row. It squashed him to death, that was pretty awesome.

Why would it say "took joy in slaughter"??!/

IIRC, Toady knows about this, and it will be fixed. IE. If a dwarf will kill another dwarf while sparring, he/she won't get happy thoughts after the slaughter.

ya, I was preety sure that dwarves should be sad about killing their partner....

I dont really need him anyway. Got a platoon of 15 sworddwarfs/masters and 3 marksdwarfs. I dont like marksdwarfs all that much because they consume ENOURMOUS amounts of wood and steel. And, most likely, they are as apt to die as often as a kolbold.

i was hoping to train some Professional Speardwarfs for my Fortress Guard but I guess Il have to postpone it for now. I need moar fishcleaners!!!
