Exercise pump not quite what I expected...
« on: November 29, 2008, 09:47:02 pm »

So I have this one eyed dwarf, his eye was shot out by an elven archer who sprung with a goblin ambush, and I REALLY want to make him a one eyed badass soldier, just for surviving that horrid onslaught that happened just as I was re-configuring my defenses.

Naturally, with only one eye, he goes unconcious a lot, so I thought "no problem, I'll just work him out on my screw pump until he's too hardcore to have two eyes", but I seem to have missed something...

he's been training on that thing for a year between passing out from exhaustion and passing out from pain, but it seems to have leveled him in AGILITY, rather than strength.

Is there any way to get it to build up his strength? or is there an alternative method? at least I know he'll be able to dodge oncoming enemies.

Its random. each time a new stat is gained, it's distribution is totally random. this guy just happened to get agility many times in a row :(

Keep him at it, i'd say, since he's probably getting much more skilled at it now and will pump for longer. a few toughness points are bound to be on the way...

Yeah, it's random, and unrelated to the sort of task done. Keep plugging away at it.

On a different note, screw pumps don't have to actually pump water in order to be used as exercise machines. If you have a use for the extra square of water, though, might as well have her help out with that.

And armor is at least as important as stats for surviving combat. On iron-ore-less maps, I've had champions get slaughtered even by non-archer goblin squads because they rarely had anything better than a plain iron breastplate. But I've heard of lone dwarfs in well-made steel gear taking down half a siege or more.

Actually, that pump goes to my goblin drowning pit. I didn't really want to build another pump, and the pit wasn't holding any goblins at the time, so I just had him use that.

I've got a bunch of steel and a legendary armorsmith from a fey mood who created some bad ass silver platemail. it might not be practical, but god dammit it's shiny! and that's all that counts!

EDIT: I also have a platinum high boot, but that one's sort of embarrassing.

I beleive the general consensus is that Artifacts make up for any material flaws through Sheer Awesome.

Only vaguely. Made of the same substance and put to the same use, but a bit like comparing a castle and a doublewide trailer.

Nice name for the one-eyed dwarf, try giving him a 2-handed sword later. :P
Dynasty Warriors go!

Please tell me this dwarf gets an eyepatch.  A super-tough elf killer with an eyepatch is just about as good as it gets.

I'm talking about the bronze colossus. It's supposed to be made entirely of bronze.
But really he's just a softie inside. They all are really. When megabeasts come to your fort you never welcome them inside and give them a hug, do you. You heartless bastards...

Just popping in to provide some useless info:

It is possible to give dwarves the smaller equivalent of two-handed swords (which are too big for them).  Just try to get them to equip a longsword, and they'll use it in both hands.

Steel plate is <3

But even that is no match for having a really skilled weaponsmith turning out *Steel Bolts* which are then used by legendary marksdwarves.

In skilled hands, those bolts really do damage. Even if good marskdwarves didn't spew them at rapid pace, they would remain really deadly. One hit stops and knocks down an enemy right away. After that, there's plenty of time to keep shooting to kill them.

If any make it past the barriage, then the champions in full steel plate mop them up (or, rather, make it so their entrails need to be mopped up)
