EA officials on the call also took time to address Will Wright’s ambitious life simulator Spore, noting that the company “has tremendous confidence” in the title, but also adding that the title is apparently on the edge of slipping from EA's fiscal 2008 release schedule, saying “it's right on the bubble of Q4, if not some time in early fiscal '09” -- anywhere between January and June of 2008. The company furthered its enthusiasm for the upcoming strategy title, noting that “it's more like The Sims... it's a title that we hope to revisit sometime in the future.”
This just, once again, reinforces my conviction that mainstream games and their producers are going down the toilet. It's all about making their wallet's fatter at the expense of their quality and dedication. Not that delaying a game to make improvements is bad, but their irresponsibility in undertaking projects that they know they can't deliver on in a decided time frame.
Right now, Independent development is where it's at. I think that in the coming years you will only see more of the bloody first-person shooters and Madden remakes from the big-boys, while the underdogs will be crafting the masterpieces that more and more gamers really want.
I used to be rooting for Spore to be the greatest game of this decade, but now I'm thinking that Dwarf Fortress will be even better.
