Which way to go? All of them are doable early, even the dual classes (albeit they require a bit of metagaming to get the exp to get the dual classes at any reasonable point. But I think it's not "gamebreaking")

No. Can't cast spells further than 6th/7th level, and cant sneak. And gets little enough as far as combat bonuses go.

The idea is to make a swashbuckler and dual-class it at level 11 to mage. Then I lock all the other characters in a room to prevent them from bitching from being kicked, and get mage to level 12 from spell-learning exp. That should leave me enough exp room avaiable to max the mage as well.

In particular, I am fond of the thief skills of sneaking and illusion detection (which save space on invisibility spells and detection spells, to an extent), and on decent weapon usage&higher hitpoints.
The swashbuckler is a good tradeoff because he is an "almost-fighter" thief, with nice to-hit and defense bonuses. The only offset is that you lose the backstab damage multiplier, but otherwise it's pretty nice.

I was trying a dual-wielding short sword one, but I think IŽll redo it as a single-weapon guy, because dual-wielding is not that good

There are organized, graphed, and freely downloadable guides on exactly this subject.

Where they are, I forget.  All I know is that I downloaded a few of them.

By the way, a lot of them do in fact say "Bard".  More specifically, the Blade kit.  There's an entire article detailing why the Blade is the best class in the entire game (mind you, it did take into effect the Throne of Baal expansion for most of it, but said that the Blade could still compete quite well in native).

Heh, I forgot the terms.. assuming that multi class means that you're going up in both classes at the same time, and dual means you're focusing on the 2nd one.

Thief is worthless at ultra high levels in AD&D because your skills go up waaaaay higher than what you need. Once you have nearly 100% chance of doing anything, go for another class.

So, no multi-class. That's why I think there's only one or two multiclass thief NPCs in the game. The others are all thieves who dual classed as mage or something.

But.. if you're talking about BG1, one of my favorite characters was a thief/illusionist. He'd make himself invisible, then backstab. But at higher levels, this becomes useless as everyone's armor is good enough that you can't hit them with a backstab.
