Blocks made from metal ore bought from merchants
« on: November 13, 2008, 12:02:03 pm »

This is just a detail thing:

I can't make blocks out of metal ore with my Dwarves. Rocks, yes, metal yes, even wood, but not metal ore. Which is fine.

But I requested them and bought them from merchants. I was thinking initially that I'd be able to smelt the blocks. Which of course I can't. The blocks I have are also listed in parenthesis on the items screen ("k" key), which (I think) means that someone owns them. I can't tell if the reason I can't smelt them is that smelters can't smelt blocks or that the blocks are already claimed by someone.

I think that overall though, either I shouldn't be able to get them from merchants, or I should be able to make them with my mason.

Also, it'd be nice to be able to smelt them.

Is the metal ore in question set as an economic stone -- as it is by default? That would keep you from making blocks out of it, or indeed doing anything with it other than smelting it.

I'm pretty sure blocks can't be smelted. The parentheses mean that an item was produced off-site and doesn't count towards your wealth, and don't affect what you can do with it.

You can make those blocks yourself, you just need to set it as not an economic stone first.

I agree with the smelting thing though.

But I CAN build buildings and structures that require blocks with said metal ore blocks. I think I'll just go and do that as a way to get rid of them.

You should be able to add a reaction that allows you to turn blocks of ore into ore, and then you would just smelt.
Not that i know how to do this...WIKI!

BTW, Trombone rocks...

I found this on the wiki and thought of this thread:

It is possible to turn blocks back into stone. You'll need blocks in a bin (preferably metal) that is exposed to lava. Each blocks object will become a molten object of the same stone type, and because it is in the bin, won't be subsumed into the lava. After it cools down, each object will have reverted to the base stone type. Metal bins will not risk destruction by the lava. Note that this does result in having stone in bins, a state of affairs that isn't normally possible.

I have no idea if that actually works but I'd love to hear from anyone who's tested it.

My first thought was "what happens if you do it with mugs?" - 1x ore = 3x ore mug = 3x ore?
