Aha, got it - I went in to reclaim, and now I'm doing a site survey.  My site is a 3x3 site on the west bank of the brook "The Outrageous Dent", with the south edge of my settlement at the same latitude as the brook's short eastward wobble.  Latitude is 18 squares north, 28 squares east of the extreme southwest corner of the Region map.  If you scroll along the bottom edge of the Region map until you reach Fidalebovo (elven settlement) and move due north, you'll be one square too far east.  Similarly, the source of the stream Scarreigns enters the mountains one (regional) square west of my site; that stream is a tributary of the stream Flier of Rancor which empties into The Last Swamp, an estuarial marsh of the Blueness of Clearing - my world's southwestern-most ocean.

Hopefully you can find the site.  I encourage you to grab a slightly-wider starting site to take advantage of that river... now that I know how to world-gen it from scratch, I may do the same.

I'm completely unsure as to how effective my strategy is in reality, but it always works well for me.

I usually wind up "mazing" with walls or a moat, and then train plenty of Marksdwarves. While the enemy is busy walking the spiral to your fortress, you manage to pick of most of them.

Traps make this strategy even more awesome.

Also, I've found that "walling in" areas you frequent (fishing spots, outdoor farming areas, et cetera) is very effective. Create a wall around the entire area and have it only reachable from a staircase located inside the walled area. Obviously this only works if you have an underground fortress, but there are really no pitfalls to it, especially if you decide to build a roof (glass, if you want to farm there). I've had farmers still picking strawberries while Goblins were literally being smashed against the walls of my "greenhouse".  :D
Technically, you don't even need an underground fortress for the walling in you mentioned to work.  You just need your fort and the area in question to be linked by something that can only be entered at either end (namely a tunnel).

We need to gather up the GCS clothes to sustain our conspicuous consumption lifestyle, but one of my engravers recently carved "NO BLOOD FOR GOLDEN SALVE" in a hallway.

You,sir, win.

I'm going to be depressed all day now.

That was a very nice story in the OP. Much approval.

Also, for future reference: There's an easier way to get the seed than to abandon/legends. "Export Local Image" will pop out the seed in a separate text file.

My preference is to make any outdoor usage connected by a two deep z level tunnel, channel around the walls/fortifications, fill that channel with nasty stuff on hand (channel is not connected to fort.) and if possible (not a tree farm) roof that sucker and stairs for a firing platform.

EDIT: never mind, disregard.
