For the record, Vista (with no viruses/rootkits/whatever bogging it down) is no worse about a brand new (as in first time you've plugged it into the machine) flash drive than ANYTHING else.
Your friend has probably just accrued a massive amount of viruses.
For that matter, putting a 2.0 device in a 1.0 slot doesn't want to work well anyway.

Well, freshly installed and patched Vista seems like it'd be pretty damned snazzy. I was half-tempted to upgrade myself.

Unfortunately depending on your hardware and software usage profile it can either be a magnificent thing or a lesson in how ill-accustomed XP made us to compatibility issues.

Creative Labs, for instance, would seem to be unable to create functional drivers for Vista if you held a gun to their heads (and plenty of people would love to do just that). I happen to have an SB Live! card for instance, which is just about the worst case scenario of bad Vista drivers.

Sure, this isn't really Microsoft's fault, but it's still a reason for some people not to upgrade (like me), until it's fixed. My friend's computer was an unfortunate, unstable mess... and I know it's been kept clean of malware and the like because I was the one who told them how to make sure of that. This is probably for sundry reasons and maybe I'm wrong to fault Vista for it... but it was nonetheless an unstable computer and not for the typical reasons which I know how to prevent and repair.

Many people call that "hardware lag" actually.
So jumping off a cliff is perfectly fine if a lot of people do it, then?

You know, this argument never made any sense to me... I mean, plenty of people have metaphorically, if not literally, jumped off cliffs because it was the culturally-acceptable thing to do. Look at human sacrifices (The kind where you willingly have your heart ripped out and given to the gods, not the other kind) , ritualistic/honor-based suicide, etc. Most of the things we do, we do only because someone told us to do it, or we witnessed an older sibling, parent, or someone else we might look up to, doing it. It's not always a bad thing to abide by culture. Without culture we'd have no way to relate to each other, and survival as a species would be much more difficult.

Also, the metaphor is completely off, as saying something is a bit different than jumping off a cliff, and as Footkerchief said...

That is how language works, yes.

Oh, and jumping off a cliff isn't necessarily a negative thing always resulting in death, assuming there is either sufficiently deep water underneath, or it is a very low cliff.

Sorry for the derailment.
